EXTRA ACTIVITIES TO PRACTICE STESS AND SYLLABLES
We talked about the information below yesterday. Re-read it again today. Then work the exercises that have stars and are bolded. REMEMBER TO LOOK AT THE EXAMPLES THAT ARE GIVEN TO HELP YOU DIVIDE THE WORDS AND CIRCLE THE CORRECT SYLLABLE!!!
Syllabication: Posición de sílabas
1. Última sílaba (last syllable)
2. Penúltima sílaba (next-to-the-last syllable)
3. antepenúltima sílaba (third syllable from the end of the word)
4. antes de la antepenúltima sílaba (4th or 5th syllable from the end of the word)
Example: Señorita
Se - ño - ri - ta
TA is the Última sílaba
RI is the Penúltima sílaba
ÑO is the antepenúltima sílaba
SE is the antes de la antepenúltima sílaba
El énfasis se puede encontrar en palabras donde la sílaba tiene el sonido más alto y más fuerte y en palabras con el acento escrito. (The STRESS can be found in words where the syllable has the highest and strongest sounds and in words with a written accent)
El acento escrito es una pequeña rayita que se coloca sobre la vocal de la sílaba para indicar el énfasis. (The written accent is a small mark that is placed on the vowel of the syllable to indicate the stress.)
Por ejemplo
casa
ca-sa
El énfasis/stress is on the Penúltima sílaba which is CA
Say the word and hear the stress.
La palabra capitán lleva acento. CA - PI- TÁN
El énfasis está en la sílaba TÁN dónde está el acento escrito.
******Otros ejemplos:
En papel, escribe la palabra, luego divide la palabra en sílabas y encierra en un círculo la sílaba que tiene el énfasis.
1. libertad
2. papá
3. lápiz
4. inglés
5. médico
6. universidad
7. hospital
8. leche
9. pelota
10. pájaro
En el idioma española, las palabras se clasifican en cuatro clases:
1. Agudas
2. Graves or Llanas
3. Esdrújulas
4. Sobbreesdrújulas
La clasificación de las palabras depende de la pronunciación de la palabra y la posición del énfasis.
AGUDA es una palabra que tiene el énfais en la última sílaba. Unos son palabras que terminan con una consonante, excepto N o S and require NO written accent pero otros tienen un acento escrito como papá.
pa- pá
El énfasis está en la última sílaba PÁ.
Otro ejemplo: color
co-lor.
Tiene el énfasis en la sílaba LOR.

Escríbelos en papel, divídelas en sílabas, y encierra en un círculo la sílaba que tiene el énfasis.

10. nació (palabras del pasado dónde el énfasis está en la última sílaba)
GRAVE
Remember the rule for words that end with a vowel (a,e,i,o.u), n or s, the stress is on the next to last syllable or the penúltima syllable unless there is a written accent mark elsewhere in the word.

6. plumas
7. americano
8. apartamento
9. papeles
10. amigo
