6 TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE POSITIVE SELF-TALK
-Self-talk should be practiced ahead of time (outside of competition).
-While there are best practices, the focus should be less about negative/positive, or good/bad self-talk, and more about what is PRODUCTIVE for athletes in certain situations.
-Individual preferences are okay.
-Self-talk should be focused on what should be done, rather than what should be avoided.
-Different situations might call for different types of self-talk.
-It is difficult to turn off self-talk. For most people, self-talk is going to happen, for the good or the bad, regardless of whether you work on it. Knowing that, you may as well make the monologue in your head helpful… and positive!

Yesterday we lost Muhammad Ali.  If you want to reflect upon how remarkable he was, look beyond his audacity and performance in the ring -- stunning as they were.  Think about who he was at what time in history.  He always had a lot to say to people in the arena since that was where he was raised.  Here is a sampling for those of building something from nothing -- any of us trying to make impact in any way:

1) "I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want."

2) "I should be a postage stamp. That's the only way I'll ever get licked."

3) "What you're thinking is what you're becoming."

4) “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

5) “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.”

6) “Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

7) “Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.”

8) “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'”

9) “If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, they can sure make something out of you.”

10) "I shook up the world. Me! Whee!"

11) “It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it’s the pebble in your shoe.”

12) "Life is a gamble. You can get hurt, but people die in plane crashes, lose their arms and legs in car accidents; people die every day. Same with fighters: some die, some get hurt, some go on. You just don't let yourself believe it will happen to you."

13) "Don't count the days; make the days count."

14) “Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It's not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything.”

And perhaps most importantly of all:

15  "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth."He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life. Muhammad Ali

I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.' Muhammad Ali

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter"
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Take pride in how far you have come.  Have faith in how far you can go.

From Jessica Gilroy
Athletes are driven by commitment.  To their sport.  To themselves.  To Excellence itself.  Commitment fuels the extra mile, the final set, the last quarter, the sprint on the line.  Going on when the body begs to stop.

Great Quotes from a Great Runner.
Steve Prefontaine

"Some people create with words or with music or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run. I like to make people stop and say, 'I've never seen anyone run like that before.' It's more than just a race, it's a style. It's doing something better than anyone else. It's being creative."

"A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more. Nobody is going to win a 5,000 meter race after running an easy 2 miles. Not with me. If I lose forcing the pace all the way, well, at least I can live with myself."

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift."

"I don't just go out there and run. I like to give people watching something exciting."

"Something inside of me just said 'Hey, wait a minute, I want to beat him,' and I just took off."

"What I want is to be number one."

"Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it."

"I'm going to work so that it's a pure guts race at the end, and if it is, I am the only one who can win it."

"How does a kid from Coos Bay, with one leg longer than the other win races? All my life people have been telling me, 'You're too small Pre', 'You're not fast enough Pre', 'Give up your foolish dream Steve'. But they forgot something, I HAVE TO WIN."

"A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways they’re capable of understanding."

"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement."
-Steve Prefontain

"If I am still standing at the end of the race, hit me with a board and knock me down, because that means I didn't run hard enough"
Steve Jones

A true legend in the sport, Welshman Steve Jones ("Jonesy") won the Chicago Marathon twice--in 1984 and 1985. The first time his 2:08:05 was a world record. His next crack at it (2:07:13) came up just one second short of Carlos Lopez's standard. Known as "The Fox" for his ferocious running right from the gun, Jones was also a pioneer at slightly higher altitude distance training, running 90 miles a week in Park City, Utah, at 7,500 feet, a good 2,000 feet higher than many of his contemporaries who trained in Boulder, Colorado.

Here are two of Steve Jones Quotes:

“I just run as hard as I can for 20 miles, and then race.”

"If I am still standing at the end of the race, hit me with a board and knock me down, because that means I didn't run hard enough"

"A victim is someone who has a seemingly insourmountable obstacle placed in their way, whereas a hero is a victim who conquers the same challenge.

Quotation from Albert Einstein's autobiography:  “It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom. Without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail.”

"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea."  [Antoine de St. Exupery]
