Agenda for the Week:
Welcome to the Norris 8 Block! This will be a challenging and enriching year for you as I work hard to prepare you for the rigors of high school level literary study. The new Common Core Learning Standards set very high goals for 8th graders. I believe that with hard work and focus all students will make great gains on the road to achieving these goals. I hope that parents and students alike will use this site to help stay organized and ahead of upcoming assignments. Generally, I update this site on Mondays, and it will include an overview of the week, the homework schedule, my after school availability, as well as helpful links and review games for quizzes. Please check it regularly. Student grades can be accessed through the parent portal. I update these grades every 1-2 weeks.
This week (10/27-10/31), students will be continuing to read, analyze, and discuss the first whole-class novels. 8g students are reading the contemporary environmental novel Flush by Carl Hiaasen. 8r students are reading the American classic The Call of the Wild by Jack London. 8e students will be reading William Golding's dark allegorical novel Lord of the Flies. We will be taking roughly three weeks to work our way through these books. During this time, we will be reading at least some of the assigned chapters each day in class. However, students will also be responsible for completing these chapters on their own. I will be after school as much as possible in order to provide support, as both The Call of the Wild and Lord of the Flies are very complex and challenging books. We will also have vocabulary this week- 8g and 8e will receive their 3rd lists from the books with a quiz on Friday for 8g and one on Monday for 8e. 8r students' self-chosen vocabulary words for chapters 4-5 are due Tuesday. On Tuesday, I will giving 8r students a new list of words I've selected from the novel. There will be a quiz on these words on Friday this week.
All Classes- Be ready at any time for a DYRT Quiz! Be sure you're reading and reading carefully!
