Introduction

Do you think it would be easier to understand the book you read if you had a map? Some authors of science fiction and fantasy books include maps, and others don't. Lois Lowry is an author that didn't include maps in her books, J.R.R. Tolken is one who did. You will make a map to help you understand the book you read was well to share with others who may be reading the book.

One aspect that can usually be found in a science fiction book is that the place the book is set in is imaginary or the future. It is not a place where we can find a real map of if we wish to use one to understand the book.

Process

First you must prepare; here is what you must do:

  1. Read the rubric
  2. Get a copy of the log where you will take notes, Quote Page, or prepare you reading journal with appropriate pages.
  3. Read the book!
  4. Take notes about the quotes. Please write any quotes that will help you draw your map. Any references to buildings and locations should be noted.
  5. Finish the book.
  6. Decide what type of map you will be creating:
    • Will this be a map that a character could have made?
    • Will this be similiar to an arial photo that is labeled?
    • Will this look like a modern day map with modern conventions?
  7. Determine a type of medium (colored pencils, computer graphics, etc.) and then gather your supplies.
  8. Make sure that what you will be creating meets the standards on the rubric.
  9. Draw the picture.
  10. Place the quotes near their approproate illustration. I suggest that if you are using art supplies that you print out the quotes neatly (by hand or computer) on small pieces of paper and then attatch them to the illustration.
  11. Read through the rubric again to check that you have done everything necessary.
  12. Make sure you bring the map to school when it is due.
