Flanagan Media Center… a library without walls

The Flanagan Information & Media Center offers the connection to a world of information and thought outside the four walls that house its 27,000 plus books. The technology and resources available enable students to become active learners, encouraging and supporting participation along the way. This wealth of resources is available not only in the media center, but all across the Flanagan network. Collaboration between administration, faculty and the media specialists produce a program that is constantly changing and growing, and one that is at the heart of the curriculum of the school and the community it serves.  As the media specialists, we are in a unique position to affect both teaching and learning.  Our goal is to set up students and teachers for success.  Let us know how we can help you.

ACCESS

Monday through Thursday
7:00 – 3:30

Friday
7:00 – 2:35

There is an open door policy for students before and after school as well as during lunch. At all other times, students must bring a signed pass completely filled out from their teacher.  Up to three students may be sent at any one time from a teacher’s classroom.

Faculty members may schedule whole classes for the Center. Before signing up in the “Visitation Calendar”, we ask that you take the time to complete the Media Request Form.  This gives us an idea of your intended use of the library and helps us help you and your students.

Substitute teachers cannot send students to the Information & Media Center. Also, please do not send substitute teachers with classes for scheduled visitations without making prior arrangements.

COLLABORATION

The media specialist can:

• orchestrate access to appropriate information resources within and beyond the school

• work collaboratively with teachers to use the principles of instructional design to create, implement, evaluate and revise information-based learning activities

• model and promote effective uses of technology for learning and teaching

• collaborate with teachers to integrate information literacy competencies throughout the teaching and learning process

General orientation sessions will be given to all freshman students via the Pathfinder Course.

If you feel, however, your students need a particular lesson on search strategies, use of the Internet, an overview of the various electronic databases, use of the presentation software, account management, acceptable network usage, copyright implications, network navigation or any other skill that would help them in their learning, we can provide that instruction.

CIRCULATION

Faculty members have extended loan privileges for all print and A/V materials checked out from the Center.

Equipment is available for check out to faculty members for a specified loan period. Please return materials according to the loan arrangement. A/V equipment is in high demand and we don’t want to have to come looking for you.

Equipment may be taken off campus providing you have signed a property pass.
