mercredi le 25 juin, jour 4
Tomorrow's Mass has been re-scheduled to 1:00 PM
lundi le 23 juin, jour 2
There is no homework for tomorrow. Students have begun cleaning out their materials. I instructed students to bring home small amounts of their belongings over the next 3 days as opposed to taking it all at once. Some students may also have extra duotangs, notebooks or other materials. These items should be stored and re-used for next year.
There will be a math test on Monday. Students must know, explain or demonstrate the following concepts.
- savoir les différents angles. 174
- Savoir les différents droit, 175
- Trouver les axes de symmétrie. 176
- Nommer et connaître les quadrilatéres. 179
- Savoir les solides et les développments. 184
- Sommet, arrêts. face 184
- Trouver le périmétre et l'aire de différents objets ou formes. 188
There is some homework due tomorrow. Pages 188-191 in Interactions are due for tomorrow. These assignments are on perimeter and area. We worked on these lessons for a good portion of the day. Students should do their best to complete and understand these concepts as there will be a math test on Monday.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind students that they must still maintain appropriate behaviour in the school and classroom. It is normal for students to become a little more excitable this time of the year however there are limits and there are consequences to going beyond those limits. Thank you.
Students must complete page 186 in Interactions. Students completed the developments in class and just need to answer the questions.
Students may download the jeopardy game template if they wish.

Dear parents and students
On Thursday June 5 our class will present our project at the Mayor's Environmental Expo. This field trip shall take place downtown at City Hall in the Atrium Center. Students and parents who participated in the Heritage Fair should be familiar with the location.
We shall depart from the school at about 9:00 Am. Then go to City Hall and set up our displays. Afterward the class is booked into 2 workshops. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the meantime students will take in all the other displays and greet visitors to our display We will return to the school by 3:00 PM.
Students must bring a GREEN lunch a refillable water bottle and their backpacks. Students should avoid bringing electronic games, too much food or other unecessary items.
On Monday afternoon I will distribute permission slips and media release forms that must be returned, signed and completed by Wednesday morning.
There will be 2 media release forms sent home. The purpose of these releases is to allow the media to film, photograph or speak to your son or daughter about environmental issues. There are 2 separate forms because the city requires one and the school district has their own form which must be signed. I thank you in advance for your patience regarding all this paperwork.
Finally, I have recruited a couple of parent volunteers but more is always better for this type of event. If any parents would like to attend the Expo please email or send a note with your son or daughter.

Field Trip
Tomorrow our class will be going on a field trip to Weaselhead Park. The field trip will last all day. Students must prepare and dress accordingly. Long pants and a jacket are a good idea as well as sturdy footwear. No sandals or open toed shoes. We will be walking along dirt paths most of the day. As well students will be required to bring their clipboards, a pen and a pencil as they will be completing activities in the field. Finally, a green lunch and water bottle will also be required. Weaselhead Park has limited facilities and there will be no opportunity to purchase food or water.
Some additional information
Your child will require the following items:
- A home-made sit upon if the child does not want to sit on the ground.
- Appropriate clothing for the weather. Students will be visiting an area where there is water, and there is always potential for rain, so protection from the elements is essential. Dress in layers to allow for variation in temperatures. Sensible footwear is also a MUST. Students must not wear sandals, flip-flops or any other open toed shoe. Runners or hikers are okay. A hat is also necessary to protect against the sun.
- Mosquito repellant and sunblock should be applied before coming to school. Students may bring some along in case re-application is necessary.
- Students must also bring a bagged lunch. There is no opportunity to buy food at Weaselhead.
- Students' backpack to carry all their materials; lunch. sit-upon,facial tissues, clipboard, pencils, lined paper or notebook, extra sunblock, repellant, etc.
Parent volunteers should arrive at the school by 8:45. We shall return to school by 2:45
I expect students to be courteous, respectful and on their best behaviour during the entire course of this field trip.

Behavioural concerns in class
Recently I have noticed an increase in rowdy behaviour in our class. This has become a problem throughout the day but I have been able to manage it through my classroom management system of fining students. I have noticed that the rowdiness tends to intensify at the end of the day. Please speak to your son or daughter to reinforce acceptable behaviour at school.
Congratulations to all students who took part in the Heritage Fair. It was a very good experience

Students should spend time polishing and typing their public service announcements. Today in class we made an outline that all students could follow. We watched some PSAs and discussed what their purpose was. Some students are struggling getting their thoughts down and some are reluctant to do any extra reading or research on their topics. Please have a look at the outline below. Try to encourage your son or daughter to be as creative as possible yet stick to facts. The outline below should be a guide. Students may put other things into their speeches if it is purposeful.
I. Introduction
-greeting
-age, grade etc
-topic of PSA
II. Creating Awareness
-State basic facts about the topic
III. Convince people to change their behaviour
-List things people can do to change
-List consequences for not changing.

There will be a health quiz on Friday April 4. It will be an online test. Please note the study guide below. All information to be reviewed is in the Together Times or in the handouts and notes we did in class.
- Name the listening skills
- Demonstrate how to listen to others.
- Describe an experiences you have had with listening.
- Describe how it feels when someone you are talking to does not listen.
- Explain how listening is like a gift.
- Give examples of body language that demonstrate good listening.
- Name and describe group roles.
- Identify common problems that occur in group work.
- Explain the difference between why messages and blaming messages.
- Demonstrate how to give a why message.
- Name ways to give and receive compliments.
- Know the categories of compliments; actions, ability, effort, appearance.
- Demonstrate or describe how to accept a compliment.
Devoirs: Students must write the rough copy of a speech (English or French, I expect students to develop and deliver the speech in both English and French). This will be used as a public service announcement. We held a short brainstorming session in class today on the various topics the PSA could address. Some of these topics were:
- Global warming
- Natural resources
- Littering
- Endangered animals
- Recycling and the Rs
- Wasting food
- Vegetation
- Use of gasoline in vehicles
Students were informed that the main purpose of a PSA is to educate the public or bring awareness to a certain problem. In our case the problems have to do with the environment as well as attitudes and habits of students at St. Pius X
Tomorrow students will share their drafts with classmates and we will discuss how to write and deliver an effective announcement.
Please look at the links at the bottom of this page. There are links to websites wich may help you with your PSA.

"Why" messages
Today students had a communication lesson in health. Students learned the difference between "why" messages and "blaming" messages. They also learned how to give a "why" message in a conflict.
Blaming messages attack the individual and damage a person's self esteem. They often cause the recipient of the blaming message to go on the offensive. A "why" message attacks the behaviour rather than the individual. The "why" message allows the person to retain their dignity during a conflict.
The correct way to give a "why" message.
- State the behaviour that is bothering you.
- State why it is bothering you.
- State what you would like to happen.

Memory Sticks
Yesterday, I distributed memory sticks to students. I have placed a label with each student's name, grade, and the school name on them. Students will keep the memory sticks until the end of the year and then they will return them. Students will be responsible for the memory sticks. I will instruct the class on the proper use and care of this technology. They are very useful for transporting documents to school and back home. They are also a good backup for files. They are much more reliable than floppy discs. If you have any questions or concerns regarding memory sticks please do not hesitate to send me an email.
Classroom computers
As some of you may know I had 6 older computers set up in our classroom. These were computers that were left over from our lab. I have decided to remove them because we were not using them very much. I feel that this is a better use of the space. Those old machines ran Windows 95 and therefore a lot of the programs were out of date.

Devoirs for Wednesday, January 9
There is no homework due for tomorrow but there are a couple of assignments due Friday. The first is a social studies comprehension assignment. The second is a newspaper article detailing the birth of Christ. Students will have some class time to work on these tomorrow.
Our class has also had a chance to work on their simple machines powerpoint presentations. These should be completed next week sometime. Our class will also wrap up our "les fêtes" unit in French language arts. More to come on what we will be doing next.
Smartboard in our classroom
Since early October our class has been using a smartboard. A smartboard is an interactive white boad that allows users to interact with it by using a computer and an LCD projector. It is a useful tool to have in the classroom and students have enjoyed having it so far.
I have gradually been learning how to use it. I attended a workshop on Dec. 14 and I learned some useful tips. I have been trying to incorporate it into our daily lessons. There has been a bit of a learning curve and some adaptations to make so I am not quite there yet.
Smarttech, the company that makes the smartboard and smartboard software allows students and teacher to use their software. It is a free download and it is available by going to the website and downloading the package. This would be useful to students because as I begin to create notes and lessons students will be able to download and view the lesson on their own home computers using the smartboard software. The software is very useful even if you do not have an interactive whiteboard connected to your computer. Even if students make minimal use of the software this year they will undoubtedly be exposed to interactive whiteboards at a later date.
I have placed a link at the bottom of this page for the smartboard software. If you wish to download the software for your home computer please feel free to do so. I downloaded it and installed it on my home computer and school computer and I have not had any problems. Make sure you download the complete package because you get a large gallery of images. Kind of like clip art. It is a pretty big file so it takes about 30 minutes depending on your internet connection

PT Interviews container recycling and St. Vincent de Paul
Tomorrow is parent teacher interviews. Tomorrow's interviews will start at 4:30 PM. the slots are for 10 minutes each. Please ask your son or daughter for the note detailing your interview time.
There will also be a sign-up sheet posted beside the classroom door for bottle and juice container recycling. The grade four class is in charge of this task and so I would like to ask for help regarding this matter. The job involves coming to the school once per week and picking up the bottles and juice boxes. They will already be bagged and you will just have to bring them to any bottle depot and then send the money to the school with your son or daughter. Pick up day is on Thursdays. There are about 27 weeks of school so that works out to about 1 time per family.
St. Pius X families are also asked to donate food items for St. Vincent de Paul. Each class has been supplied with a specific list of items to donate. These items will be placed into a hamper for a needy family. I will post this list by the door and then you may sign up for the items you wish to donate. Then simply send the items with your son or daughter and they will be place in the hamper.

Devoirs: There will be a math test on Monday. Students must also complete a Simple Machines French comprehension assignment for Tuesday. The assignment is on paper in students' duotangs. It should not be confused with the project described below.
Simple Machines in the Home
I would also like students to locate and observe simple machines around their home this weekend. If possible I would like students to take pictures of the simple machines with a digital camera. The pictures could either be emailed to me or put on a memory stick (If you do not have a memory stick I can provide one for use for this assignment) and brought to school. It is my plan at this point to have students make a power point presentation with their photos and observations of the simple machines they found in their home. Please feel free to take as many pictures as you like. It would be nice to have 2-3 pictures of each simple machine along with an explanation of its location and function in the home. It is important to understand that this is NOT a mandatory homework assignment for this weekend. If students have time to do it that is great. If not that is okay also. If you have any questions regarding this please feel free to email me. I will check my email this weekend.
Another suggestion for enrichment on this topic is to have students browse the simple machine websites at the bottom of this page. There are many pictures on these sites. However I do not feel that is as valuable because students are not actually making observations in their own environment.
Wheels and Levers
We have just started our study of wheels and levers. In this unit students learn about basic components of simple machines: how they are assembled, how they operate, how they are used. Students explore different techniques that can be used to transfer motion from one component to another, using simple connectors and various levers, gears, pulleys and band driven systems. As they work with these components, they learn the functions that each can perform, including sample applications and ways that they can be used in a larger system. As part of their studies, they examine how these simple machines are used to change the speed or force of movement.
In the first part of the unit students view a video about simple machines then we read a French text that explains all of the machines and the French vocabulary that goes along with it. In the second part of the unit students will do experiments and investigations to explore simple machines.
I am planning to complete this unit before the Christmas holidays.

Computer lab information
Last week our computer lab underwent some changes. Our school is one of 10 schools in the district piloting Thin Client. Thin Client is a system that allows all of our computers to run applications which are located downtown. Applications such as MS Word and Paint will no longer run on each individual machine. The advantage to this is that as our lab ages we will not be required to upgrade our machines or our programs. The machines will run as well as they did when they were new. The only implication for students is that they will have to individually log on and log off the computers using a user name and teacher assigned password. Once they log in the system will recognize them and they will be able to access programs such as Inspiration, Kidspiration and All the Right Type. Last year when we upgraded the lab we were unable to upgrade the licenses for these programs.
Students will save their work in their own folders on a drive called the shared drive. All of the work they have completed up to now has been saved and transferred to this new drive. Classroom computers have been unaffected by this change.

samedi le 27 oct
Students in grade four will soon begin work on a new French Language Arts theme. The title of this theme is “Les Fêtes”. In this unit students will look at common Christmas traditions and the origins of these traditions. The unit is divided into 8 lessons. Each lesson will incorporate aspects of literacy, writing, history and some religious beliefs. The material contains some easy to read text and some challenging text, as well as many graphics. I hope that this will appeal to a broad range of learners and will hopefully lend itself well to our grade four program as we lead up to the Christmas holidays.
The following is a simple overview of each of the 8 lessons.
Lesson 1: La veillée de Noël
This lesson introduces the theme by discussing an old style Christmas Eve celebration. It also discusses the tradition of the Yule Log. Students will read the text and we will discuss vocabulary as well as discuss and compare their personal experiences with what they read and saw in the text.
Lesson 2: La crèche de Saint Francois d’Assise
In this lesson students will discover the origins of Nativity Scenes and the “Crèche”. The reading for this lesson is a little more intense and there is an assignment that goes along with this lesson.
Lesson 3: Le Feuillage de Noël
In this lesson students will learn the vocabulary and the origins of some different types of plants associated with the holidays. They will also learn where the tradition of the Christmas tree came from.
Lesson 4 La table de Noël
In this lesson students will learn about the origin of some of our traditional Christmas foods as well as foods enjoyed in other countries such as Poland, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Portugal, and Germany.
Lesson 5: Marché de Noël
In this lesson students will learn about the origins of Christmas shopping and will look at some historical and modern shopping habits.
Lesson 6: Les Rois Mages
In this lesson students will learn about the significance of the visit of the Magi. They will also learn about the Epiphany and the origin of Christmas gifts.
Lesson 7: Saint Nicholas
In this lesson students will learn about the legend and feast of Saint Nicholas celebrated on December 6. We will also look at how other countries celebrate this feast and Saint.
Lesson 8: La petite fille aux allumettes
In this lesson students will read the story of “La petite fille aux allumettes” (the little match girl)
Each of the lessons will have comprehension and writing activities to encourage learning. The reading, vocabulary and length of each lesson get progressively more difficult as the unit goes on.
Phrases de Dictée, Dictation, Verb studies and Writer’s Workshop
I plan to continue these activities and I will integrate them and make them part of the theme. This could include dictation of vocabulary words from the texts, sentence writing from our holiday theme etc. I also plan to begin alternating dictation and verb studies from week to week. This means that one week students will have dictation and the next week they will have a verb test. I hope this will make things easier and less stressful for students.

There has been a lot of vocabulary and some new expressions to learn. In preparing for the test please keep in mind that it would be a very good idea to re-read the book before next Wednesday. If possible read one chapter per day between now and next week and then review the material in the duo-tang.
For this test students should know or refer to the following.
- Les parties des requins, p. A3
- Savoir le vrai ou faux, A5
- Savoir les expressions à la page A8
- Savoir le vocabulaire à la page A8-A9
- Savoir l'information sur les marsouins, page A14
- Savoir quel personnage a dit quelle chose, page A15
- Les expressions à la page A17

*There will be a re-test of the verb test from Monday. Students who did not score well on the first test will re-take the test. Please scroll down to see what to study as well as some information about this activity.
*There will also be a dictée tomorrow.
*Students are asked to bring a shoebox or similar-sized box to school tomorrow for a science activity. If you have an extra box please send it in case some students were unable to find a box of their own.
Please read the information below about verb studies.
Verb studies.
In order to help facilitate the writing process and to improve the overall quality of students’ written and oral French skills I have decided to begin studying verbs. Students have completed 2 lessons on verbs. In the first lesson I presented a list of essential vocabulary for students to refer to. Students have a separate duo-tang for their verb studies. Eventually I would like students to know these terms.
In the second lesson students practiced conjugating the verbs. Conjugating refers to writing or saying the verbs for each person in a particular tense.
On Monday we had our first verb test. I noticed that some students had a fair bit of difficulty remembering the test items even though we had gone over it in class. I would like students who did not score well on the test to re-take it.
For the test I would expect all students to be able to do the following.
-List the 9 personal pronouns.
-Conjugate the verb aller in the present tense
-Know the “participe passé” of the verb aller
-Conjugate the verb aller in the imperative tense.
Today in class we reviewed these concepts and I gave the students some tips on how to study for this test.
-Write the personal pronouns on a piece of loose leaf without looking at the list. Do this several times until you are comfortable with the list.
-Ask a parent or older sister or brother to quiz you.
-Do a practice quiz by conjugating the verbs then checking your answers.
I am making students re-do the test because I feel these basic things need to be known before we can progress to more tenses or different verbs.

Some tidbits of Information
Tomorrow morning there will be a presentation called Kananaskis Idol. It is an interpretive presentation for all students about bird life in Kananaskis country. Right after the presentation we will have writer's workshop where students will work on their writing.
In the afternoon we will have the dictée as well as a follow-up question and answer session from our morning presentation.
Students in grade four had a math test today. I was generally pleased with how the test went. However I may have underestimated the time required by students to complete the test.
Dictée and Phrases de Dictée
It has come to my attention that there has been some confusion regarding these activities. I would like to take this opportunity to clarify the expectations for these tasks.
Dictation will take place once per week, usually Thursdays. However this sometimes presents a problem because on days 1, 3 and 5 I teach grade five French language arts so there is a bit of a conflict which does not always allow the time to do the dictée. In order to make it easier for students I will formally post on the class webpage when there will be a dictée as well as remind students at 3:15 PM. Students should not be waiting until the night before to practice spelling words for the following day’s test. Students are also expected to have the words written in their agendas. Although they are posted on this page I have given class time for students to write the words. If they did not have time to write them in the time allotted they should find time to do it at home from the class webpage. They are also free to come in at 12:30 PM most days and write them then.
Phrases de dictée are always due Fridays. I usually find the time to correct them but if I do not have time to complete the correction I will do it on the following Monday or Tuesday. Until now students have been focusing their writing on correctly forming plurals and singulars for nouns, adjectives and verbs in the present tense. This will change in the coming weeks as I plan to introduce verb studies. (more information to come)

5 Step Method
I use this method when teaching problem solving to students. I feel it helps to organize the problem and figure out which strategy will work best. Students also receive credit for each individual step. The process is the important part. That is what I am marking.
Step 1; Ce qu'on cherche (What are we looking for)
In this step students must identify the question in the problem. They must write a sentence to explain in their own words what the problem is.
Step 2; Ta démarche (How will you solve the problem)
In this step students must state what they will do to solve the problem. For example, I will multiply 9 by 8 to get the answer.
Step 3; Phrase maths (The math equation)
In this step students write the equation then solve it. They must show their work
Step 4; La réponse (The answer)
In this step students write a sentence to give their answer. The answer must be directly linked to the first step. This is why the sentence is so important.
Step 5; Vérification (Students check their answer)
In this step students must check their answer. Sometimes I omit this step depending on whether or not it is possible. Usually if the problem involves an operation such as division or multiplication it is possible.

Have you seen this food or containers
Lately I have been noticing uneaten lunches and leftovers coming back into the classroom after lunch. Some of these lunches appeared untouched. I have asked students to claim their containers and bring leftover food home but for some reason the message has not gotten through. If you should happen to recognize any of the items pictured below please speak to your son or daughter about the importance of picking up after themselves. Thank you.

Students who would like to do some extra work this weekend could have a look at the link at the bottom of this page. This link leads to a story about Jean L'Heureux. He was an early fossil hunter in Alberta. We will study his story in class on Tuesday.
I hope everyone is having an enjoyable long weekend. I would like to take this time to explain the Writer's Workshop activity I have planned.
Every Friday students will have the opportunity to write in class. Generally I will give them a topic and they will write a rough draft of the assignment. From time to time we will do pre-writing activities such as brainstorming to help students develop ideas. It is my goal for students to develop a bank of writings from which they will select pieces for publication. Then they will follow the writing process to edit and publish their writing. A published piece of writing is typed, relatively free of grammatical and spelling errors and has been revised several times.
Published pieces will be evaluated and go toward the overall French language arts report card mark. Criteria for evaluation will be presented at a later date. It is my goal to have students complete 4 published pieces for this reporting period. Topics for writer’s workshop so far have been:
- Terry Fox (a selection of ideas)
- Parle-moi de ta famille. (Talk to me about your family)
- Mon Voyage (tell me about a trip you took)
All writings including rough drafts are kept in a writing folder that students have made themselves. Students often ask how much they need to write. I find it is easier to give students a set minimum and maximum. That may be 1 page, double sided or just one. I will rarely tell students to write 5-6 pages because it becomes too cumbersome to edit and type. I am looking for a balance between quantity and quality.
Typing documents
The first draft is always hand written in pencil. Students double space their writings and make sure to write the date at the top of the page. If students do not have enough time to finish their rough drafts in class they must complete it on their own time. Once they have completed the rough draft they must type their work in order to prepare it for the editing process.
I intend to train students to type and print their rough drafts because it makes the process so much easier and more efficient. It is much easier to revise and make changes to a piece of writing that has already been typed than to re-write draft after draft of revisions. Students all have a folder on our shared drive. These folders contain all the work students complete on computers.
Completing work at home
Of course, students are encouraged to complete work at home. Students may type their work at home but then it is very important that the file be emailed to me so that the student has his or her work on hand. Once I receive the email it is easy for me to save the file in the student’s folder. A student can also politely request that I email him or her the file, that way they can complete any work they did not have time to finish in the computer class. In order to facilitate this process I will allow students the use of computer time on selected noon hours. I also have 6 stand alone computers in the classroom that will become available once a minor electrical problem is resolved. These machines are not quite as good as the ones in the lab. Although they all have MS Word, they run Windows 95 and students must use a floppy disk to transfer their work from the Win 95 computers to the Shared drive. Although these issues do present some challenges for students I feel it is good because it allows students to practice using and managing electronic data. Currently, our class time for the computer lab is day 3, from 2:00 Pm to 3:00 Pm. I may be able to find more time depending on circumstances within our school.

Hello everyone there is some work to complete for tomorrow. Students began a project today in science. They must construct a shadow clock. Tomorrow will be the first day doing observations with it. Some students have completed the work. There are detailed instructions in the students' science duotangs.
Students could also begin the phrases de dictée assignment which is due Friday. I will be looking at plurals and singulars once again week.
dimanche le 30 septembre
Hello everyone. I would like to give everyone an idea of some things that are coming up this month. Look for things to get a little more hectic as we say goodbye to September and watch all the leaves turn lovely shades of yellow and brown. Below you will find a summary of some of the things I am planning for October. Thank you to all students who submitted the Terry Fox writing assignment by email this weekend.
FLA
We will start the novel Jonas le Requin Rose. We are a little behind schedule in FLA already. We have not had dictee for the last 2 weeks. I will have the words for the next 4 weeks on this page. These are the words students will use for phrases de dictee. The words come from the novel we are starting. This novel study will likely take the better part of the month of October. I am also hoping to have students publish 3 pieces of writing in October. Along with grammar studies and other odds and ends October will be a busy month in FLA.
Maths
Students are currently exploring division. We have begun using the textbook Interactions. It is my goal to complete 2-3 lessons per week in this text. Generally I teach a lesson then students do the work to reinforce the concepts taught in that lesson. I have explained to students that I plan to mark their work. The marks gathered will go toward their report card mark. Tests and quizzes will make up 50% of their report card mark. The other 50% will come from our textbook lessons. I hope to complete the Exploring Division unit by the end of October. Students understand that incomplete work results in a lower mark. Missing assignments that are not completed result in a zero. However it is important to understand that I will always accept work without a penalty. Students have a chance to have the zero erased as long as they do the work and show it to me at lunchtime. This is the general policy in all the subjects.
Science
Students have just had a quiz on light. I should be finished marking the quiz this week sometime. We are about halfway through this unit. This week students will begin one of 2 projects. The assignment is to build a solar/shadow clock, then use it to make observations of the different lengths of shadows. This assignment is due Friday, Oct 5 and we will spend most of this first week of October on it.
Études Sociales
Our study of Alberta is well underway. Students have completed the first lesson in the introductory unit of Notre Alberta. The text and some of the concepts of this program are challenging because of the level of the language used in the text. Students will have to work especially hard in Social Studies this year. It is my goal to complete at least one lesson per week, if not 2.
Religion
Students will be studying Baptism. The first assignment for this year in Religion is a poster that students are required to make. The title of the poster is "I am Unique". Stuedents are expected to do this poster in MS Word. We spent one class period getting used to the computers. On wednesday of this week students will have a one hour period to do this poster. I will expect the posters at the end of the period. These will be marked and the marks will contribute to the report card marks.
Report Cards
It may seem far away but the first term report cards are just around the corner and there is a lot of work to be completed before then. Please contact me via email for any specific information you would like to see on this page regarding marking, evaluation etc. I touched on it a bit in my math paragraph above but I would welcome any specific questions. Look for more information a bit closer to the end of November.

Unfortunately we were unable to complete the correcting of the math assignment due to unforeseen circumstances. We will finish correcting tomorrow.
There will be a science test tomorrow. Please refer to the study guide below. Also, grade 3 achievement test results were sent home today. Please ask your son or daughter for them. Achievement test results are only for students who were here last year.
Tuesday September 25
There is a math assignment due tomorrow.
Monday, September 24
There is a math assignment due Wednesday. P. 14-15 #1-10. Students do not need to do 11 and 12. This a fairly time consuming and difficult assignment. Students had 1 hour to work on it in class this morning. Some students made good progress and completed a good portion of the work. Others may need to use their class time more wisely. I spoke to students about time management. I encouraged all students to take the work home this evening and work on the assignment. I told them to think ahead at what they had to do this evening and tomorrow evening in case they did not have enough time they could spread the work out over 2 evenings and maybe some class time.
I also would like to mention that when students are drawing out tables they must use a ruler. Preferably they would make the table first with a pencil and then outline the table with a black marker. Students could also use MS word to draw a table then cut it out and paste it into their notebooks.
Instructions to make a table in MS WORD
1. Click on "table" in the tool bar. When the menu opens you should select "Insert" then click on table when the side menu opens.
2. On the insert table menu specify the number of columns and rows you will need. Then click okay.
3. Your table will appear in your document. Be certain to save your work as soon as you start because if something happens you will lose ALL your work.
4. To type letters and numbers in the table use the mouse to insert the cursor.
5. Experiment with different size fonts and other things. The more you experiment the more you will learn.
6. Print your table, cut it out and paste it neatly into your math notebook. If you do not have a printer you may email it to me as an attachment and I will print it at school.
Students saw some Brainpop videos today. Brainpop is a website that has educational videos. The videos are interesting, appeal to students and feature a wide range of topics. Many of the topics fit very well into the grade four curriculum. I like to show them in the classroom from time to time. I am considering getting a teacher membership in order to access all the videos. For this reason I would appreciate if students only watched the free videos.
*Tomorrow is picture day.
*There will be a quiz in science on Thursday, September 27.
Students are expected to know, understand or be able to explain the following concepts.
-why the lengths of shadows change during the day.
-draw shadows of objects at early morning, noon and late afternoon
-explain the dangers of looking directly at the sun
-define and understand opaque, translucent, and transparent
-give examples of objects which are opaque, translucent, and transparent
-how to make shadows bigger or smaller by moving the light source
-understand refraction and be able to give an example.
-understand that light is energy
-understand that light moves in waves
-understand that light moves in a straight line from a source
-name our main light source as well as give other light sources.
Wednesday, September 19
Students should spend about 20-30 minutes exploring the Royal Tyrell museum website. The link is at the bottom of this page.
Tuesday, September 18
Students must complete pages 15, 16, 17 and 18 in grammaire by tomorrow.
Dictation words for this week. Phrases de dictée are due on Friday. Students must choose 5 words and write sentences with them. One sentence must be written using plurals and the other singular.
Example:

September 12, 2007
Dear Parent(s):
Parents are the primary and most important educators of their children, especially in matters related to faith and morals. Our role as Catholic educators is to support you in teaching your children in these matters. This letter is to keep you informed regarding human sexuality instruction in your child’s classroom.
The human sexuality curriculum was developed by a working committee established by the Catholic Bishops of Alberta, and is being taught across Alberta in Catholic schools in Grades 4 through 9. At the request of our parents, this curriculum is taught in the Religious Education program. This provides the opportunity for teaching the principles of family life education in the context of our faith tradition.
Human sexuality instruction in your child’s class will include addressing the following topics:
• The student, as a child of God, will describe physical, emotional, spiritual, and social changes that occur during puberty; e.g. secondary sexual characteristics, maturing in one’s identity and faith.
• The student will examine the various factors that influence body image: culture, media, peers, role models, weight loss industry, etc., and, as a child of God, critique their standards of beauty.
We will be teaching these lessons in mid April or May. The Calgary Catholic School District has developed Human Sexuality Parent Handbooks to support parents in teaching their children about human sexuality. It includes some information about Church teachings regarding this topic, more information about the curriculum, some tips for parents, and additional resources. If you would like a copy of this resource, please visit the District website at http://www.cssd.ab.ca/default.asp?V_ITEM_ID=195
The District will be hosting Family Life Parent Information Evenings. These Information Evenings will be an opportunity for parents to examine the curriculum and supporting resources, and to have their questions and concerns addressed. There is currently one session planned for Wednesday, March 12 from 7:00-8:30 PM at St. Paul Centre, 124 – 24 Avenue N.E.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this instruction, feel free to contact me. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Denis Fortier

Hello everyone Phrases de dictée are due tomorrow. This is a weekly sentence writing activity where students use that week's dictation words in a sentence. Students are required to write 10 sentences. I mark the sentences one on one with the students on Fridays. This year I may have to stretch out the marking because of the larger student numbers in our class. This week students must remember to use capitals and correct punctuation. They must also pluralize correctly. This way they put into practice the theory they learned earlier this week in grammar.
Wednesday September 12
Hello everyone there is a short assignment due tomorrow in science. Students participated in a science experiment where they learned how shadows are formed and how they change size throughout the day. Students are asked to draw the three different shadows we saw today.
Also do not forget about the dictation tomorrow. Please scroll down to see the words as well as phrases de dictée are also due Friday.
Tuesday September 11

There is a grammar assignment to complete. Students should complete pages 11-14 for tomorrow. Many students have already completed these pages and most students should be pretty well finished.
Students are expected to complete a math problem this evening using the 5 step problem solving method we learned in class today. Please read further for a complete description of the 5 step problem solving method.
Dans une semaine Nathalie boit 24 verres de lait et Martine en boit 15. Combien Nathalie boit-elle de verres de lait de plus que Martine?
They must show their work>br>

Science
Our first topic of study in science this year will be Light and Shadow In this topic, Students learn about light by studying the effectsof light on things within their environment. Theylearn about light sources, about materials that lightcan pass through and about what happens when a material blocks or changes the path of light. By observing shadows and their motions relative to a light source, students discover that light and shadows fall along a predictable path. They discover that mirrors, prisms and a variety of other materials can affect that path by reflecting and refracting light and by splitting light into colours.
Please have a look at some of the links at the bottom of this page.

Hello everyone there is some homework to complete by Monday. The assignment is a French grammar assignmnent. Students have been studying nouns, adjectives, and verbs. They have learned some of the rules for pluralizing nouns and adjectives. This assignment requires students to refer to the rules and then write the plurals of some words. Please stress the importance of looking back to see the rules when writing the words. This assignment will be corrected and marked and students should expect a quiz on this material in the near future.
Pages 8-9-10 are the sheets due for Monday. Some students may already be finished because they had time to work on it in class.
Hello everyone and welcome to our class webpage. I will maintain this webpage as a tool for communication between school and home. The webpage contains information useful to parents and students about our activities in grade 4 here at St. Pius. If you have any questions about this information please do not hesitate to give me a call at the school or click on the email icon and send me an email.
Quia Activities:
Students can do web based activities at home which are directly related to school subjects. Simply scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on the activities that interest you.
Classroom routines and procedures
In order to make our classroom run efficiently I have put into place several procedures and routines. Students have spent part of September getting accustomed to these routines. Please skim through the following information and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to give me a call or email.
Physical Surroundings
Students will spend the majority of their time inside our classroom.
Students are expected to keep their belongings in their desk. I have made space for extra materials however students are to ask permission before accessing supplementary materials.
The classroom teacher is responsible for the seating arrangement. Occasionally I may feel a need for change. At this time I will make the changes I feel are necessary.
Agendas and Homework
Students are required to have their agendas on their desks at all times.
The agendas are used for communication, reminders and personal organization. I encourage students to use their agendas as their own personal organizer. The more they use it the easier it will become to make it a lifelong habit.
I would ask that parents find a moment in the evening to go over the student’s agenda and ask questions. Afterward please sign the agenda so I know you have looked at it. If you have anything to let me know please do not hesitate to write me a note in your child’s agenda.
Homework
I rarely assign homework simply for the sake of assigning homework. Students will almost always have a chance to at least begin an assignment. If you feel your child has an excessive amount of homework it may be because they are not using their class time as effectively as they could. If this becomes a cause for concern please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss it.
Incomplete Homework Assignments
It does occasionally happen that a student will be unable to complete a homework assignment. Should your son or daughter fail to complete an assignment there is a procedure in place to follow. After I check the homework if it is incomplete the student is required to fill out an incomplete homework assignment slip. That student then returns at lunchtime to complete the homework assignment. Once the assignment is completed I will mark a big "C" on the slip. Homework is due at 9:00 AM. If the student has forgotten an assignment at home or has lost it the student still fills out the incomplete slip and still stays in at recess to do the work that was left at home.
Basic Routines
Students line up outside in the morning and wait to be allowed inside the school.
As they enter the school students are expected to change their shoes and go to the classroom to get ready for the day.
As soon as students enter the classroom they are expected to copy down the « ordre du jour » for the day in their agendas.
Once students are settled I check the agendas. It is at this time that I collect any notes, forms or permission slips that are due back.
Students eat lunch in the gym. After lunch they go outside for recess.
At the end of the day students pick up their belongings, I sign their agendas and they are dismissed.
Bathroom Breaks
Students are expected to use the washroom and get a drink of water before classes begin. For example, in the morning as they enter the class. Of course, in case of an emergency I will allow students to use the washroom.
Speaking French
The nature of our school and our programs require that students make an effort to speak French at all times.
Staying Organized
Staying organized can be quite a big challenge for students in grade 4. Students will use duo tangs, notebooks, binders and loose-leaf for most of their schoolwork. There will be handouts and students will be advised as to where they belong. Students are expected to keep all loose papers filed away in the correct locations. Loose sheets of paper in their desks are not allowed. I will occasionally check to make sure students are following this rule.
Token Economy
In order to provide an incentive to students to make positive decisions concerning behaviours such as speaking French and completing homework assignments I will implement a token economy in our grade 4 classroom.
Every week students will receive a "salary". This salary will be in the form of play money. Students may use their salary to purchase small items provided by the teacher or privileges such as spending a recess using the computer, or a noon hour playing in the gym. These items will be auctioned off at the end of each month and students who have saved the most money will benefit the most. Students may have the opportunity to earn extra money by volunteering to do certain chores or by doing spontaneous good deeds.
Students may also lose money by failing to follow the established rules of our classroom community. Fines will be levied for not finishing homework assignments, speaking English when they should be speaking French. Other rules shall be discussed and implemented as the need arises.
I have had success with this system in the past. I feel this activity works well for children at this age because they understand the concept of following rules. They can see why certain rules are necessary to make the community function better as a whole. They understand that certain incentives or deterrents can make rule following easier. Although some students may not admit it, I am convinced they understand why it is important for them to do their homework and get as much out of being in a French Immersion environment as possible.
Curriculum Links
This activity should be considered a role play. It is practice for when students are faced with choices in the real world. This activity uses the same concepts people use to govern their daily lives. Some of these are:
• People do things for a reason.
• Every action has a reaction (consequence)
• Everyone is held accountable to the decisions they make.
• Positive decisions come with positive consequences.
Numerous links to the curriculum can be made through this activity. The most obvious areas are math and social studies but also health, religion, and morality will all be discussed when the opportunity arises. I fully expect to have teachable moments where students are faced with decisions they must make. It is these opportunities that I wish to focus on.
Finally this type of role play has the potential for a lot of fun. It will boost morale and hopefully provide an incentive to do certain things that are expected but that are sometimes difficult to accomplish.
Wednesday, September 5
Hello everyone. Students in grade four have spent the day getting used to various routines and activities in the classroom. Students practiced writing sentences in French, mad minutes and handwriting. Students also read the story The Ant and the Grasshopper. Afterward I asked students to reflect on their personalities and explain whether they thought they were more like the ant or the grasshopper.
There are no homework assignments this evening but if possible please review and return any outstanding paperwork.
Tuesday September 4
Hello and welcome to the 2007-2008 school year. As always at this time of the year I feel nervous and excited. I am anxious for what the school year will bring. The grade four classroom has undergone some changes. For those of you who are familiar with the room you will notice the changes instantly. The brown carpet is gone and has been replaced by lino. This makes the room brighter, cleaner and much easier to maintain. I am very grateful to be rid of the carpet. The school has also received a new boiler system. This should make it easier to regulate the temperature inside the classroom. As a result of the new heating system the shelves below the windows have been removed. The old shelves will be replaced by new portable shelving units sometime during the school year.
This evening your son or daughter will bring home an envelope with a great deal of information. Some of it is just information, some of it is forms that need to be completed and returned to school. In order to make it easier to make sense of it all I have compiled an itemized list of the material below.
Demographic form: This form must updated, signed and returned to the school. Please ensure the information is current. (New students to St. Pius X do not have to worry about these.)
Fee Sheet form: This sheet details the school fees for the year. Please fill out the appropriate sections and return the form.
Severe Allergy and medical alert form: Please fill this sheet out and return it to the school. This sheet is used to notify staff of students with allergy or medical concerns.
Internet User Form - Student: Students and parents must read this form and it must be signed and returned to the school PRIOR to the student being allowed to use the computers.
Internet User Form - Volunteer: If you intend to volunteer at the school you must have this form signed in order to use the computer or assist students in the computer lab. It is probably a good idea just to sign it and then you do not have to worry about it again.
Volunteer registration form: If you intend to volunteer in any way shape or form you must fill out this form. Once again. Even if you do not think you will volunteer it is a good idea to have this filled out. Then, if you do decide to volunteer it makes it easier than having to fill out the form on the morning of a field trip.
Annual Field trip form: This is a general permission form allowing your son or daughter to go on field trips. Any field trips will also have a specific permission form sent home prior to the field trip.
Field trip form for attending opening and closing Mass: Our school will go to St. Pius X Church on Sept 26 for the opening Mass of the school year. We will also do this in June. This form gives permission for your son or daughter to attend Mass.
Newsletter: There is ONE newsletter sent home with the oldest child in each family. I highly recommend you read the newsletter carefully. Take note of important dates and then keep the newsletter in an accessible location.
Year calendar: This calendar details events throughout the school year. It also contains our school's progressive discipline plan. Please read through the calendar and discuss it with your son or daughter.
Accident Insurance Form: This is an optional program that you may participate in if you wish.
Campbell's Labels for education poster: Information regarding Campbell's soup lables.
There are 12 different items in all.
