The New Development in the Republic of Guinea There are constructive and democratic developments taking place in Guinea today. First, as of February 16, 2009, the new Guinean government, through the auditing commission, has recovered 56 billion Guinean Francs from corrupted government official during Lansana Conte’s regime. According to Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, President of Guinea, this amount is just a small amount of taxes that still need to be paid to the government. Moreover, through this same policy, the minister of telecommunication has recovered 31 billion Guinean francs from telephone companies operating in Guinea. In another development, On February 16, the President Camara told all his cabinet ministers that non of them will be eligible to run in the 2009 presidential election, and those who would like to run should leave the government post now. He asked the international community to support his government because the Guinean army did a coup for peace, not a coup d’état. Finally, the Guinean government has taken the unpopular struggle against drug smugglers. More than seven drug out-lords have been arrested. Among those arrested were seven solders in the Guinean army, a Nigerian and nine civilians. After preliminary investigation two of the people arrested were released because there were no credible evidences against them. Is this the beginning of democracy in Guiea?
