Science Fair Poster Contest – Getting Started Grade 5 Option #1 - Expectation #1 – Questions that I need to answer- quick notes Possible issues to look at: - Consider the impacts on the environment of changing grains such as wheat, corn, and rice into flours, and the flours into breads, pasta, crackers, or wallpaper paste - Changing new trees, lumberyard scraps, and recycled paper products into pulp, and pulp into paper and paper products - Changing petroleum into plastic, and plastic into everyday items such as rulers and soft drink bottles, some of which end up in landfills and some of which are recycled into clothing or rugs. - Other Issues __________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ What issue have you chosen? _____________________________________________________ What are the environmental impacts of the process that you have selected? Look at the perspectives of the food manufactures and the consumers. - Recycling paper, cardboard, plastics, and organics can keep materials out of landfills for a longer period of time, but the processes involved may have their own impacts. Size must be no larger than 40cms x 65cms (about one half piece of bristol board). Nothing should hang below or above the Wall Display to make it larger than the required size. The Wall Displays are going to be hung on walls with masking tape. Please ensure that the posters are notso heavy and awkward that they will not be able to be displayed. It is not a requirement that the displays be flat. A certain amount of relief effect can be appealing. When the Wall Display is hung on the wall all of the printing should be easy to read. Please do not put stapled pages of information on the Wall Display. Please Print On the Back: STUDENT'S NAME (BLOCK CAPITALS) Grade School Teacher's Name Criteria: Does it look appealing? 30% Is there Scientific Content? 30% Is it Accurate? 15% Is it Creative? 15% Can it be easily read? 5% Is the grammar and spelling correct? 5% (Criteria for evaluation will be the same as used for the United Counties Science Fair) Timeline for Science Fair Project 2011 Read science projects rules and topic ideas: Friday, January 14th Find a notebook or create a computer file to collect and organize notes, pictures etc . about your project: Monday, January 17th Look at different sources (books and websites, etc.) to help you find something of interest to you: Tuesday,January 18th Choose a specific science fair project; Talk to your parents about your choice, write the topic name on line D and ask them to sign line E: Wednesday, January 19th Get your science teacher’s approval for your project: Thursday, January 20th(B day science & Monday, January 24th (A day science) Write “Big Question” and think about experiments and things you can study to find your answer to the Big Question Test hypothesis by doing experiment(s), reading information, conducting surveys, questionnaires: Thursday, January 27th Draw conclusions – make charts, graphs, tables if necessary Write/Draw abstract of Science Fair Project Write 1st draft of science fair project: Monday, January 31st Write 2nd draft of science fair project Write final draft of science fair project: Thursday, February 3rd Practice your presentation at home. Bring your science fair project to school for display and presentation: Friday, February11th Attend LSPS Science Fair with your family and friends to enjoy the work of all our school’s super scientists: Thursday, February 24th. *A small number of select projects from each grade will be chosen for display at the United Counties Science Fair taking place at St.Lawrence Intermediate School on April 2nd from 8:30 a.m to 2:00 p.m.
