Assignment Getting started- Buying a computer.

Objective of this assignment
On completing of the task the student will be able:

Preparation: students should previously be introduced to file management, use of printer, use of search engines, using MS. Word,
information on file sizes click here
Task 1- find information about a computer systemFind information about a computer system that is $1,000-$2,000. these should be new, currently available brand name products. They may be customized from manufactureres choices and carry a single point resonsibility - i.e. one person to go to if something is not working.
You may NOT select used computers, nor build it yourself computers, nor discontinued or rebuilt computers.
Print a copy of the information by cutting and pasting the page into Word add your name and period. Print and hand in. - you MUST save this file
You must note the URL of the place you got the information. You will use this project again at the end of the year - do not loose it! also remember the url will no longer take you to the same page in June that it does now - you must have the hard copy in your notebook
Task 2- write a MEMO
Individually, write a MEMO using Word memo template, telling your boss, parent, friend, or other about the computer system you selected. Your memo will be short but full of information on computer parts
You will use Bullets.
- brand of computer
- note CPU processor speed and type
- note size and type of hard drive
- list standard components of hardware such as CD/CDR/CDRW or DVD/R/RW or floppies,zip drive, what speeds are they
- modem? network card? speeds?
- memory, type, size?
- monitor - dot pitch, size, flat scrteen?, flat panel?
- other features?
- cost of package
after each bullet item, include a description about what this part does.
finally write a persuasive paragraph or two about why you should buy this computer. attach all back up data, advertisements, data, from manufacturer, pictures. etc. and reference them in the report.
You will not leave any of the Microsoft WORD template text unchanged - that is address, phone, web address etc. hand in the individual memos for grade. save in computer costs folder. call file "cost memo 1 xyz"
This will be a major grade for this project.
task 3 - group project and presentation
Each group will consider how o spend $30,000 (on computers and monitors only)for a classroom of 23 student computers and one teacher's computer. Review the dollars you each want to spend on computers and equipment for a the task above. You will talk together to select a system and components that you will all agree on as the best.
Presentation. Your group will present your choice to the class and help us to understand what the computer is. This is sort of a sales job. The entire group will be asked questions about the technical parts of the selections, be ready to answer and defend your selections.
Prepare 3 questions about components of your computer - (try questions like -"what is the advantage of having a larger single dimm rather than two smaller dimms?" rather than a question like" what is the size of the memory of our computer?" the first 'good' question causes thought' the second 'bad'question requests memorization of usless data.in general that will be given in the form of a quiz to the class.
