Why Study Paul?
Paul's story is not just about historical events...
It's about the transformative power of encountering Jesus
Today we'll explore:
His dramatic conversion experience
The depth of his transformation
What his story means for us today
How we can develop the same evangelistic spirit
Who Was Saul Before Christ?
Religious Credentials
Pharisee of Pharisees
Hebrew of Hebrews
Student of Gamaliel
Expert in Jewish Law
Roman Citizen
His Actions
Approved Stephen's stoning
Led raids on Christian homes
Had believers imprisoned
Sought authority to persecute
"Breathing threats and murder"
"I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers."
β Galatians 1:14
The Damascus Road Experience
The Journey Begins
Saul obtains letters from the high priest to arrest Christians in Damascus. He travels with companions, filled with zeal to destroy the church.
The Encounter
A brilliant light from heaven flashes around him. He falls to the ground. A voice speaks: "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"
The Question
Saul asks, "Who are you, Lord?" The answer changes everything: "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting."
The Response
Blinded and humbled, Saul asks, "What shall I do, Lord?" He's led into Damascus, where he waits three days without sight, food, or water.
The Crucial Realization
"I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting"
In that moment, Saul understood:
Jesus was ALIVE
The Christians were RIGHT
He had been persecuting GOD HIMSELF
God's Instrument: Ananias
Ananias's Fear
"Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem."
Even disciples were terrified of Saul's reputation
God's Reassurance
"Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel."
God had a specific plan for Paul
"Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
β Acts 9:17
The Immediate Evidence of Change
Within Days of His Conversion:
He Was Baptized
Immediately after receiving his sight, Paul was baptized, publicly identifying with the very movement he had tried to destroy.
He Began Preaching
"Immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, 'He is the Son of God.'" (Acts 9:20)
He Amazed Everyone
All who heard him were amazed: "Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name?"
He Grew Stronger
Paul increased all the more in strength, proving that Jesus was the Christ.
What Paul Lost and Gained
What He Lost
His reputation among the Pharisees
His position of power
His comfort and security
Respect from his former colleagues
His previous identity and status
What He Gained
A personal relationship with Christ
True purpose and calling
Joy in suffering for Jesus
Eternal perspective
The privilege of serving God
"Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ."
β Philippians 3:8
The Time of Preparation
Paul didn't rush into ministry. He spent time being prepared:
Arabia (3 Years)
After his conversion, Paul went to Arabia (Galatians 1:17). This was likely a time of reflection, prayer, and receiving revelation from God about the gospel.
Return to Damascus
He returned to Damascus to preach, growing in strength and confounding those who opposed the gospel.
Jerusalem Visit
After three years, he went to Jerusalem to meet with Peter and James, spending 15 days with them (Galatians 1:18-19).
Tarsus Years
He spent time in his hometown of Tarsus before Barnabas brought him to Antioch (Acts 11:25-26).
Total preparation time: Approximately 10-14 years before his major missionary journeys!
"But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."
β Acts 20:24
The Core of Paul's Gospel
Five Key Themes:
1. Justification by Faith
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God." (Ephesians 2:8)
2. Christ Crucified
"For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2:2)
3. Unity in Christ
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)
4. The Resurrection
"If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins." (1 Corinthians 15:17)
5. Life in the Spirit
"For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8:2)
How Paul Spread the Gospel
His Methods
Preached in synagogues first
Reasoned with people
Used marketplaces and public spaces
Performed miracles as signs
Established local churches
Wrote letters to teach and encourage
His Approach
Became "all things to all people"
Supported himself by tent-making
Trained other leaders
Built teams for ministry
Followed up with those he reached
Adapted to different audiences
"I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings."
β 1 Corinthians 9:22-23
The Motivation Behind the Mission
What Compelled Paul's Evangelism?
Love for Christ
"For the love of Christ controls us" (2 Cor 5:14)
Gratitude for Grace
He never forgot he was "the chief of sinners" who received mercy
Sense of Obligation
"I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians" (Rom 1:14)
Urgency of Time
He knew people needed to hear before it's too late
"Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!"
β 1 Corinthians 9:16
What We Learn from Paul's Story
1. No One Is Beyond God's Reach
If God could transform Paul, the chief persecutor of Christians, then no one is too far gone for God's grace to reach them.
2. Encounter with Jesus Changes Everything
Paul's life was radically transformed by meeting the risen Christ. A genuine encounter with Jesus produces undeniable change.
3. God Uses Our Past for His Purpose
Paul's knowledge of Judaism, his education, even his former zealβGod used it all. Your past is not wasted when you surrender to God.
4. Evangelism Flows from Gratitude
Paul's passion for evangelism came from his deep gratitude for the mercy he received. When we understand grace, we can't help but share it.
5. Suffering for Christ Is Worth It
Despite immense hardship, Paul counted it all as joy. The gospel is worth any cost.
