Living Organisms -- By the end of the 7th grade, students will investigate and understand facts, concepts, principles, theories, and models related to organisms and the factors that regulate and influence their behavior through the process of inquiry.
7.3.1 Investigate and understand living things
a. List the characteristics of living things and identify what they need to survive
b. Explain the relationship between classification and evolution of living things
c. Describe early systems of classification
d. Investigate and differentiate between treatment and prevention of viral and bacterial diseases
7.3.2 Describe and examine the plant kingdom
a. Identify the characteristics that plants share
b. Name basic needs of plants and describe their life cycle
c. Describe the process of photosynthesis
7.3.3 Observe and evaluate animal behavior
a. Compare instinctive versus learned behavior
b. Observe natural behavior patterns in an animal
c. Draw conclusions about an animal’s ability to learn new behaviors
d. Understand migration and group living as behavior cycles
e. Identify behaviors that influence courtship
f. Use inquiry to carry out a scientific investigation
