Chapter 6 Words for Business & Labor 1. stock = A company makes money by selling shares of ownership to stockholders. (I bought 100 shares of stock in Apple Computer.) 2. dividend = When a company shares its profits by paying its stockholders quarterly payments. (My stocks paid big dividends last Spring) 3. merger = When two or more things come together, as in traffic lanes or two businesses join. (ATT merged with Cingular for the new ATT.) 4. integration = When things or people are united into a whole, like racial integration or parts of a business (In the 1950's whites and blacks were integrated.) 5. mogul = A member of a ruling class, or in business the leader of an industry with lots of power. (Rockefeller was an oil mogul) 6. endorsement = Support or recommendation for a person or a product. (Jordan endorses Nike) 7. union = Laborers and workers organizing together to fight for better pay, benefits or conditions. (Von's has a grocery Union) 8. strike = Stopping work to force the employer to negotiate your demands. (Several years ago baseball players went on strike to stop the World Series)
