1. Casablanca has become something of a “cult” film, in part because of the personality of Humphrey Bogart. What is it about Bogart as a performer that makes him interesting and memorable?
2. Why is this film considered a classic? How does Casablanca capture myths about America and how we would like to be perceived? Would this perception be changed if the ending were different?
3. Although the narrative is constructed on a change of heart on Rick’s part, are we ever in any real doubt as to what Rick’s final choice will be? What are some of the clues, from the very beginning of the film, that tell the viewer what Rick’s future behavior will be?
4. This film is considered to be wartime propaganda. What messages are the writers trying to convey? How do national and ethnic stereotypes contribute to these messages?
5. Explain why you agree or disagree with the decision to award Casablanca the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Be sure to use many examples to support your position.
