You've finished a rough draft no what?

Before you begin looking for spelling and punctuation mistakes evaluate and improve your writing.  Look at the "meaning" of your rough draft, make sure you have said what you meant and meant what you said.  Make sure you stayed focused and didn't veer off topic and included unnecessary information that might confuse the reader.

- Make sure the focus or main idea is stated
- Make sure your information is arranged in a a order that reflects time or thought
- Rewrite any parts that are unclear and remove any information that is not on topic
- Refine your work so that it reads smoothly

NOW!  It's time to correct and proofread.
- Check for spelling (you may also want to check a Thesaurus for a better choice of word)

- Check Punctuation (HINT:  Read your paper aloud and make sure your are breathing!)

- Capitalization (make sure all sentences begin with a capital letter and all specific people, places and things are capitalized)

- Make sure you used the correct word (commonly misused words: to, too, two, its, it's are, our, your, you're, they're, there, their)

- Check your grammar.  Do your subjects and verbs agree, do you have run-on sentences or fragments?
