HANDS 180 degrees - Picture the sky as a dome or hemisphere. Thus gives you 180 degrees of sky to work with from horizon to horizon. 90 degrees - If an object is straight overhead (the zenith), it is 90 degrees above the horizon. 45 degrees - A star halfway up the sky is 45 degrees above the horizon. 30 degrees - A star that is one third of the way above the ground is about 30 degrees above the horizon. ANGLES 1. If you extend your arm and make a fist, your fist will cover 10 degrees of the sky. 2. If you open your hand and sprea out your fingers, the space between the end of our thumb and tip of your pinkie measures about 25 degrees. 3. The width of your pinkie at arms length is only 1 or 2 degrees.
