Tuesday, December 8, 2010 This week the sixth graders are reviewing language arts, specifically, figurative language, pronouns, vocabulary and character traits in preparation for a cluster test at the end of the week. We are now learning about the writing systems of ancient civilizations. We did cuneiform writing of Mesopotamia, and Hieroglyphic cartouches from Egypt. We will then do Greek writing followed by the others next week. Fifth graders are moving along in the novel The Witch of Blackbird pond and are focusing on main idea and gist (which is the process of getting to the main idea or retelling a text in the simplest form). In social studies, we are reading and answering questions on our last colony group, the Southern Colonies (think tobacco plantations, and slavery). We will review and test next week. Spelling unit 11 is due on Thursday. No book club projects assigned this week. Next week we will have our first Accelerated Reader celebration!
