Johnson-Brock Public Schools Civics Nebraska Partnership Advisory Council (CNPAC) Portfolio Program 2012-2013 The guiding principle of the Nebraska Civics Engagement Project is that all students who attend Nebraska high schools should be able to demonstrate actions that represent a citizen who understands the importance of taking actions to preserve our democratic ideology by being an engaged responsible citizen. The portfolio consists of several basic components, each of which must be successfully completed each year. 1. Documented evidence of a Service learning project, community service or government action: experience each year in high school starting their 9th grade year. 2. Who Am I Self assessment of themselves – Written in paragraphs • What are your interests? • What do you already do to be an active participant in your community? • Why do you chose to participate or chose not to participate? • What citizenship traits do my family and I possess? 3. Civic Engagement Resume: Using a typical resume format. • What are my experiences in connecting with my community? 4. Learning “What is Citizenship” Reflection Paper Written in paragraphs • What specific knowledge do I have about my community? • What needs are there in my community? • What policies need to be improved in my community? • What have I done to be an active citizen in my community? • Summarize your personal learning experience by the individual research. • Career preparation- how has your service learning project helped you prepare for a career/your future? • Discuss the importance of civic engagement. • Describe how you are improving your citizenship attributes 5. Graduation Requirement o Summary of activities and learning should be demonstrated through the following products (rubric for assessment) Final Product/Project– i.e., power point, movie, paper (should demonstrate being an engaged citizen). • What is the necessity for the given action where you performed your service? • What issue(s) in society makes it necessary for the organization you worked for when doing your community service to exist? Example: homelessness. • Why is this civic engagement among citizens important to our community? Reflection Paper will represent what the individual learned about self and community from being an engaged citizen. Oral Presentation – i.e., a Q and A session, actual final product/project presentation.(12th grade year only) • Students give an oral presentation in front of a panel of judges, which may consist of faculty, community representatives, parents, etc. • Students explain what they have learned while completing the service learning. • Students engage in a discussion with a panel regarding their civic activity. Specific requirements for each year in high school 9th grade: • Begin service learning o Service Learning contract for documentation o 5 hours • Who am I – self assessment • Service learning proposal • Resume o Record of Service (example: media footage, interviews, supervisor evaluations from entity where service takes place; brochures, etc.) • Reflection Paper- written experience regarding the 5 hours completed in 9th grade (minimum of 1 page) 10th grade: • Continue service learning research and Civic engagement. – 10 hours • Update civics resume • Continue to build a library of documentation for your final Civics portfolio. Example: media footage, interviews, supervisor evaluations from entity where service takes place; etc. • Reflection Paper- written experience regarding the 10 hours completed in 1010h grade (minimum of 1 page) 11th grade: • Continue service learning research and Civic engagement. - 15 hours • Update civics resume. • Continue to update, create, develop, plan and/or outline for final product/project. • Continue to build a library of documentation for your final Civics portfolio i.e., media footage, interviews, supervisor evaluations from entity where service takes place; etc. • Reflection Paper- written experience regarding the 15 hours completed in 11th grade (minimum of 1 page) 12th grade: • Complete 12th grade required 20 hours or more. • Finalize resume • Library of documentation for your final Civics portfolio i.e., media footage, interviews, supervisor evaluations from entity where service takes place; etc. • Final Product/Project. • Reflection Paper- written experience regarding the 20 hours completed in 12th grade (minimum of 1 page) • Oral Presentation- to be completed at appointed times prior to final exam of semester
