How should my English notebook look?
Your English notebook should be divided into three separate sections: a Writer’s notebook section, a notes section, and a classwork section. It is very important that students keep their notebooks organized in this course!

What do I do with my journal?
Journals must stay in the classroom at all times, unless you have permission from your teacher to take them home. Daily assignments add up to be a large portion of your grade. Please do these assignments during class.

What will be reading in this course?
• Various selections from our Prentice Hall Literature: Language and Literacy textbook
• Various works including, but not limited to, Night, Lord of the Flies, and Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

Grading Scale
A 93-100   D 70-76
B 85-92     F 0- 69
C 77-84

Classroom Expectations
1. All students must be in his or her seat before the tardy bell rings.
2. No one is to get out of his or her seat without permission.
3. Notebooks are to be kept organized.
4. Students are responsible for keeping up with his or her work. Do not expect Ms. Singleton or another student to keep up with your assignments.
5. Only drinks in a plastic bottle with a lid are allowed inside the classroom. If this privilege becomes a problem in class, I hold the right to revoke it at any time.
6. When you miss a day of class, for whatever reason, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.
7. No one is allowed to go to the restroom during the first ten minutes of class, or during the last ten minutes of class. This is an Abingdon High School rule. Please go before class starts.
8. No foul language or rudeness will be tolerated.
9. Do not speak until you have been recognized. If you have a question, or the answer to a question, please raise your hand.
10. We will begin every class with a bell ringer assignment. Please begin your assignment as soon as the tardy bell rings.

Tardy Policy
Students are expected to be in class before the bell rings. Washington County School Board policy states that students will be issued detention if they receive three tardies. I will issue detention, or more if necessary, if a student is consistently late to class.

Cell Phones
Cell phones are not allowed in the classroom. If a student is caught using a cell phone during instruction time, the student’s phone will be collected and taken to the main office. Please hand over your phone when it is asked for by your teacher. If you are disrespectful, there will be more consequences.

Restroom Policy
Students are allowed to have two restroom visits a week during class. The reason why this rule is in place is because of students constantly asking to leave class to use the restroom. However, I understand that some students have different restroom needs than others. Please make sure the school nurse knows of any accommodations you might need so that there is no confusion by your teachers.

Plagiarism
During this course, students will be researching and writing papers. It is very important that students cite all materials correctly and give credit where credit is due. In a college setting, plagiarism often leads to a student being dismissed from school.

Three Warning System
If you are talking over the teacher during class, being disrespectful to another person, throwing objects across the classroom, or doing anything else that your teacher deems to be improper school behavior, you will receive a warning. After your third warning, you will be written up and sent to Mr. Hockett.
