Trini y La Niña comparten la edad: 20 años, y una manera de hacer las cosas para la que no se necesitan grandes planteamientos; se trata simplemente de hacerlas. Las dos amigas coinciden además en la falta de una madre. Durante su viaje, lo compartirán todo, incluido Olaf, un ruso que no sabe una palabra de español, y con quien La Niña vivirá una historia de amor. Y, finalmente, compartirán una decepción: Mariló. La Niña encuentra un amor y lo pierde, reencuentra a su madre y vuelve a perderla, pero también encuentra a una amiga, Trini, y ésta sí que será para siempre.
Encantador "road movie" sobre la mujer, la juventud, el amor y la amistad es el primer largometraje de la actriz Iciar Bollain (El Sur, Tierra y libertad). Co-escrito con el director Julio Medem (La ardilla roja, Vacas, Tierra), es una de las delicias del cine español de este año. La Bollain, quien trabaja en el cine desde los 15 años, sabe como dirigir actores, en particular sus dos jóvenes protagonistas, pero es su manejo de un tema tan trillado (dos amigas de viaje se usa desde Messidor hasta Thelma and Louise), para hacerlo lucir tan original y refrescante lo que revela su gran logro de dirección. Ella ha sabido captar no la perdida de la inocencia, sino la adquisición de la madurez, el momento en que sabemos cuando podemos cambiar las cosas y cuando no.
La relación fraternal de las jóvenes está muy inteligentemente construida. No hay ni un solo paso en falso, y su par de protagonistas, Silke (quien aparece en varias de las películas españolas del Festival) y Candela Peña, están a la altura del resto del film. Hola, ¿estás sola? es fabulosa.
Trini and La Niña are the same age: 20, and have the same uncomplicated way of going about things; they simply go ahead and do them. The two girls also share the lack of a mother. During their trip, they share everything, including Olaf, a Russian who knows not a word of Spanish and with whom La Niña has an affair. They have a mutual letdown: Mariló. La Niña finds love and loses it, finds her mother to lose her again, but also finds a friend, Trini, whom she is certainly not about to lose.
Enchanting road movie about being a woman, being young, love and friendship is the first directorial work by actress Iciar Bollain (El Sur, Land and Freedom). Co-written by filmmaker Julio Medem (The Red Squirrel, Cows, Land), this is one of the Spanish delights in this year's selection. Bollain, who has been working in film as an actress since the age of 15, knows how to direct actors, especially her two leading actresses, but it is in her handling of a story told so many times before (two girlfriends on the road has been the theme everywhere from Messidor to Thelma and Louise), and making it look so fresh and original that her directorial talent is revealed. She has managed to capture, not the loss of innocence, but the gaining of maturity, the moment when we learn which things we can change and which we cannot.
The fraternal relationship between the two young women is very cleverly constructed. There is no false step. And the two leading actresses, Silke (who also appears in several other Spanish movies in this festival) and Candela Peña are up to the level of the rest of the film. Hello, are you alone? is fabulous.
Iciar Bollain
Nacida en Madrid, en 1967. Comenzó en el cine como actriz protagonista de El Sur (82) de Víctor Erice. Desde entonces ha actuado en varias películas de directores como Gutiérrez Aragón (Malaventura, 88), Chus Gutiérrez (Sublet, 91), Felipe Vega (Un paragua para tres, 92), José Luis Cuerda (Tocando fondo, 93) y Ken Loach (Tierra y libertad, 94). Como directora hizo los cortometrajes Baja corazón (93) y Los amigos del muerto (94). Esta es su primera película.
