Monday, March 15
Today we start Chapter 6, Lesson 4. The basic understanding in this lesson is "Classifying Organisms." Organisms are organized in this order; Species, Genus, Family, Order, Class, Phylum, and Kingdom. The students will be expected to memorize the Classification of Organisms in the correct order by Thursday of this week. They will be tested on this Thursday, March 18. We will start today with an activity to help them understand the classification of organisms. In this activity, students are in pairs. They are given the copy of the activity and asked to Separate the organisms into two groups that are similar in some way. Cut each card out seperately for the activity.
1. Identify the subdivisions with a category name and indicate the name on the bottom of each card.
2. Now separate each group into two subdivisions of species that have more specific like characteristics.
3. Continue to make subdivisions until each organism is in a category by itself.
CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
1. On what basis did you initially separate organisms?
2. After the initial grouping, what characteristics did you use as distinguishing factors?
Download the cards for the activity below.
Animal Classification System Activity
After the activity, we'll look at page 263 in the textbook to see how scientists actually organize and classify "Living Organisms." We'll inform them of the test on Thursday. If you need to see page 263, you may view it below.

We will be having the students create a pneumonic to help them memorize the order of the classification of living organisms. They may memorize this from Kingdom to Species or from Species to Kingdom. An example of a pneumonic is King (Kingdom) Phillip (Phylum) Classified (Class) Our (Order) Family (Family) Genius (Genus) Specific (Species). They will be assigned to write this down and turn in a copy by the end of class.
Wednesday,March 17
Today we are going to focus on the "Classification" of Living Things. Students will be assigned to read sections of their book and then we will highlight the key concepts as we go along. Download the note taking form below. The textbook pages are accessible above, on Monday's link.
Chapter 6 Lesson 4 Notes
Thursday, March 18
The students will be completing pages 63-65 in their Science Notebook. They will also be tested on the correct order for the Classification of Living Things. Students will be expected to write down the order from Species to Kingdom or from Kingdom to Species from memory. If your son/daughter have left their Science Notebook at school, they may copy the assignment by viewing the pages below.
