Today we start Chapter 7, Lesson 1,the Relative Age of Rocks. We’ll begin by completing page 67 in their Science Notebook workbook. The students will list What they already Know about the Earth’s geologic history and what they Want to Find Out about the Earth’s geologic past. Next, they’ll move on to the Science Journal section on page 67 of their workbook and write 2 paragraphs describing what a geologist might have to do to find out the age of the Earth. Third, the students will complete the “predict” section of their workbook on page 68. Students will skim Lesson 1, pages 284-292 in their textbook and list three topics that will be covered in this lesson. Finally, the students will complete page 68 by finding the definitions of the key vocabulary for this lesson. The textbook pages are available below for those that need them along with pages 67-68 in their Science Notebook workbook.

Tuesday, March 30
We will be reading pages 284-288 in the textbook. We will be learning about the Relative Age of Rocks which includes the concepts of uniformitarianism, the rock cycle, the three types of rock (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary), and how weathering affects the formation of sedimentary rocks. We will also view Chapter 7, Lesson 1, part 1 slideshow to help us learn about those concepts. Download the slideshow below. Today we will complete part 2 of Lesson 1, Chapter 7. This part of the lesson covers the concept of Superposition used to determine the Relative Age of the Earth or other planetary surface features. At the conclusion of the lesson students will expected to complete a diagram/drawing demonstrating one of Nicolas Steno's four principles of Superposition found on page 290 of the science textbook. Students must label their diagram and provide a summary of what they are viewing. Download the slideshow below.
