Kwai! K'wlipai8!
Hello! Welcome!
Welcome to the Western Abenaki Language Learning Site. This page contains activities for learning and practicing Aln8ba8dwa, the Western Abenaki language. This page was born of a deep respect for the native peoples of New England and Québec and the urgent need for a more widely accessible means of becoming familiar with the Abenaki language.
I'd like to make clear that I am neither a speaker of Aln8ba8dwa myself nor in fact am I Native American. I am instead an individual who loves learning and speaking languages and loves the diversity of languages spoken in the world. As a "small-N" native New Englander, I have a special place in my heart for the original languages spoken in New England before the arrival of the Europeans on these shores, and as such wish to do what I can to assist in the preservation and/or restoration of these langauges.
The materials on this website are mostly adapted from the seminal "NEW FAMILIAR ABENAKIS AND ENGLISH DIALOGUES" by Abenakis Chief Joseph Laurent and printed in Québec in 1884. Others are from Jesse Bruchac's Western Abenaki Radio and online dictionary.
Kchi wliwni to Jesse Bruchac for the advice, proofreading, and inspiration.
