WEEK #1- AP Summer Assignment:  AP Spanish Language and Culture


Orientation, Course Themes Introduction, Stand and Deliver-

Goals:  Learn basic goals and course themes of AP Spanish, Watch movie ¨Stand and Deliver¨ to learn about AP tests in general, explore roles of actor Edward James Olmos and influential teacher, Jaime A. Escalante, gain an appreciation for obstacles that some Hispanics have overcome, and practice categorizing cultural knowledge according to the AP Course Themes...and of course, enjoy a movie!


(There is no Yabla assignment to complete this week.) 


#1. First, read the following information about this AP Course. 

About the Course: (from collegeboard.org)

Develop your Spanish language skills and learn about the cultures in Spanish-speaking parts of the world. You’ll practice communicating in Spanish and study real-life materials such as newspaper articles, films, music, and books.


Skills You'll Learn Include:
Understanding Spanish when you hear it and read it

Holding conversations in real-life situations

Writing stories, letters, emails, essays, and other texts



About the Units:
The course content outlined below is organized into commonly taught units of study (Course Themes). Your teacher may choose to organize the course content differently based on local priorities and preferences.

Course Content:  AP COURSE THEMES

Course Themes
The AP Spanish Language and Culture course is structured around
six themes:

• Beauty and Aesthetics
• Contemporary Life
• Families and Communities
• Global Challenges
• Personal and Public Identities
• Science and Technology

Themes facilitate the integration of language, content, and culture
and promote the use of the language in a variety of contexts.

The themes may be combined, as they are interrelated.

Unit 1: Families and Communities-Families in Different Societies
You’ll learn Spanish language skills in the context of studying family life and values in Spanish-speaking communities and explore contemporary beliefs and challenges that families face.

Unit 2: Personal and Public Identities-The Influence of Language and Culture on Identity
You'll build your vocabulary and learn about how language and culture shape and reflect evolving ideas about identity in Spanish-speaking societies.

Unit 3: Beauty and Aesthetics-Influences of Beauty and Art
You'll explore how ideas of beauty and art influence and reflect culture in Spanish-speaking communities.

Unit 4: Science and Technology- How Science and Technology Affect Our Lives
You'll examine how developments in science and technology affect daily life in Spanish-speaking communities and use your growing language skills to help you interpret unfamiliar words and engage in more complicated texts.

Unit 5: Contemporary Life-Factors That Impact the Quality of Life
You'll learn more about contemporary life in Spanish-speaking communities and how social status, cultural perspectives, and access to jobs and resources can make an impact on the quality of life.

Unit 6: Global Challenges-Environmental, Political, and Societal Challenges
You'll explore how complex global issues affect people's lives in Spanish-speaking communities and engage in deeper discussions to suggest possible solutions.

Skills you will practice may include:
Analyzing articles and charts on environmental issues
Listening for connections and meaning in video reports
Making cultural connections among video presentations
Writing essays to address global issues and suggest solutions
Giving a presentation comparing reactions to global challenges across cultures


#2.  Find, rent, and watch the 1988 movie, ¨Stand and Deliver"  starring Edward James Olmos. You may find it for free or for a very small fee to ´rent´ in several places, such as Amazon Prime Video for about $2.99, Apple TV, VUDU,
( or Vudu Mpvie & TV Store if you have a Roku device).  It is also available to rent on youtube, and at the moment, available on HBO and Google Play Movies.  It may be available on other platforms as well, or to borrow from your community library.


In 2011, Stand and Deliver was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".



#3  After watching Stand and Deliver, read the articles, watch the videos, and complete the activities that appear under Useful Links below.  Please complete them in order, as the Exit Ticket Quiz is meant to be completed last.

Había- there was  
enseñar - to teach (you may use in any tense)
