"Creative writing, to be powerful and convincing, usually begins with observation. The eyes and ears, the hand, the nose, and tongue: these are the first tools of the writer." --- Merlyn

Rules for Writing Workshop

Note: These rules will be amended as the Workshop unfolds.

Writer’s Notebooks

1. Bring your Writer’s Notebook to EVERY class.
2. Bring a black pen and a red pen to EVERY class.
3. Write SOMETHING in your Writer’s Notebook EVERY day.
4. Date every entry in your Writer’s Notebook.
5. Maintain all handouts in your Writer’s Notebook.
6. Keep a list of books that you read in your Writer’s Notebook.
7. Keep a list of books that you WANT to read in your Writer’s Notebook.
8. Keep an editing checklist in your Writer’s Notebook and use it.

Writing Folders

9. Write as well and as much as you can.
10. Keep all handwritten drafts of any writing we do in class in your writing folder. You may not remove these copies from the classroom. If you forget and take them with you, there is a risk that you may lose something important. This could result in a lower grade on that assignment (or maybe even a zero).
11. Back up and keep all drafts of any writing we do on the laptops. This is your responsibility. I will teach you how to back up your work. I will not remind you all the time. If you forget and your laptop crashes, you may lose all your work. This could result in you having to re-do some assignments, lose points, or get a zero.

Use of Writing Workshop Time in class

12. There will be class time to read, write, and edit your work. Use your time wisely. This will be QUIET time. I will be writing with you. Don’t make me the "writing policeman." If you waste this time, there will be SEVERE consequences.
13. Understand that writing is thinking. Do nothing to distract me or other writers when we are working. Don’t put words into our brains when we are struggling to find our own.
14. There will be time in class to talk about your writing. During this announced time, you may conference with me or with your peers.
