I salute a wonderful group of 9 Honors students and thank you for your dedication this year. Have a wonderful summer vacation. Theatre I :Congratulations! Theatre II:Let's finish the year with a successful show at the Lincoln! Theatre III & Theatre IV -- Tyler, Casey, & Josh --thank you for a great four years. Let's have a great show at the Lincoln! CLASS DESCRIPTIONS & EXPECTATIONS: Punctuality is a must! Respect yourself and others! Own your successes as well as your mistakes. Be responsible and meet deadlines. If you are absent, meet with me to get missed assignments or to make up quizzes and tests. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU! I do not drop lowest grades. I do not offer opportunities for extra credit. Every student has the exact same number of opportunities to succeed. Forensics: The study of rhetoric combines a command of the English language with a passion for public speaking. THIS IS A SPEECH CLASS! Marion Senior High School students enrolled in forensics will compete in VHSL speaking events that include: Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Impromptu Speaking, Storytelling, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, Serious Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Dramatic Interpretation, and Serious Duo & Humorous Duo. Class time will be dedicated to written preparation and practice for forensics tournaments. Debate events will also be incorporated throughout the year. Students are expected to keep up with current social, cultural, political, and artistic events on both local and national levels. English 9 Honors: The primary objective of English 9 Honors is to prepare students to communicate effectively. Emphasis is placed on four areas: oral language, reading/literature, writing, and research. This course attempts to develop student proficiency in planned oral presentations and oral readings of literary selections. The course also promotes knowledge of literary forms and terms through familiarity with exemplary authors and literary works from a variety of cultures and areas. Students will explore and articulate ideas and issues through narrative, literary, expository, and technical writing. Skills for increasing student proficiency in research techniques, use of the English language, and critical thinking skills will be utilized throughout these writing activities. Students are expected to demonstrate a dedicated work ethic and meet the challenges and deadlines of assignments. Daily note taking is required. Theatre I: Introduction to Theatre The Theatre Arts I standards are designed to provide students with a survey of theatre arts, allowing students opportunities to experience and appreciate dramatic literature and participate in the creative processes of performance and production. The course emphasizes skill development and provides theatrical opportunities that enable students to determine areas of personal interest. This class requires participation. Acting IS Doing! Theatre I students are expected to audition for each MSHS theatrical production, serve as crew members for productions, and participate in the VHSL Theatre Festival. Participation is mandatory and is part of your grade. Theatre II Dramatic Literature & Theatre History: The Theatre Arts II standards are designed to help students integrate and build upon concepts and skills acquired in Theatre Arts I. Through various modes of expression and performance, students will investigate dramatic literature, theatrical styles, and historical periods. Students will study and respond to a variety of theatre experiences that will refine their communicative, collaborative, analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills. Students will expand their artistic abilities and appreciation of the theatrical arts. Emphasis will be placed on creative drama, improvisation, acting technique, and technical aspects of theatrical production. Theatre II students are expected to audition for each MSHS theatrical production. Theatre II students are expected to audition for each MSHS theatrical production, serve as crew members for productions, and participate in the VHSL Theatre Festival. Participation is mandatory and is part of your grade. Theatre II students will also participate in the Barter Theatre Young Playwrights Festival. Theatre III Intermediate Acting & Playwriting: Through various modes of expression and performance, students will investigate acting styles and the process of playwriting, which includes character development, research, dramatic structure, conflict, and resolution. Students will study and respond to a variety of theatre experiences that will refine their collaborative, analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills. Students will deepen their artistic abilities and appreciation of the theatrical arts. Theatre III students will compete in the Barter Theatre Young Playwrights Festival. Theatre III students are expected to audition for each MSHS theatrical production, serve as crew members for productions, and participate in the VHSL Theatre Festival. Participation is mandatory and is part of your grade. Theatre III students will also research, write, stage, and perform an original solo performance. Theatre Arts IV Advanced Acting and Directing: The Theatre Arts IV standards are designed to help students refine the concepts and skills acquired in Theatre Arts III while reinforcing the principles learned in Theatre Arts I and II. Through research, performance, and evaluation, students will develop artistic criteria that will be applied to performance and directing. Students will study and respond to a variety of theatre experiences, showcasing their collaborative, analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills.
