Electrochemistry Review Games and Objectives: 1. Be able to define salt bridge, anode, cathode, oxidation, reduction, redox reaction, oxidation state, electrochemical cell, voltaic cell, electrolytic cell, car battery, nickel cadmium battery, alkaline battery, reduction potential, SHE, zinc mercury battery 2. Differentiate between electrochemical cell, voltaic cell and electrolytic cell 3. Be able to assign oxidation states to the elements in compounds. Know that the oxidation state of uncharged compounds is zero as is elements in elemental form. 4. Be able to calculate the E (voltage) for a cell with stated electrodes using the reduction potential chart from the textbook. 5. Be able to balance a "simple" chemical reaction equation using electron transfers rather than by the traditional method. 6. Be able to label the parts of a voltaic cell and describe the flow of electrons or ions through the circuit. 7. Relate a substances reduction potential to its reactivity and electronegativity. 8. Relate a substances reduction potential to whether it is best suited to be an anode or a cathode. 9. Know that oxidation is the loss of electrons and that occurs at the anode and that reduction is the gain of electrons and that occurs at the cathode.
