Chapter 8 Objectives: The student will be able to: 1. Write the formula for an element, ionic compound, covalent compound or acid given the name of the substance. 2. Balance a chemical reaction equation by adjusting coefficients (moles) to make the number of atoms of each element the same on both sides of the reaction equation. By doing this you are conserving mass. 3. Know the collision theory symbols that can be added on top of the yield symbol that brings particles together so that they can react. (ie adding heat, using a catalyst, mixing, putting particles in water) 4. Identify a reaction as either combustion, synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, or double displacement 5. Use an activity series to predict which single replacement reactions will actually occur and which will not.
