PAST NOTES TO PARENTS

JANUARY NOTES

After discussion with the other grade level science teachers, we have changed how the Chapter tests for the second reporting period are counted. I have adjusted these to count only once. A separate entry is used to count the grade a second time for those students who have done well on tests. This will result in higher average grades that yuou may view on K12.
Low test grades are a serious concern. We want our students to be well prepared for SOL Tests and for High School. I have again been quite lenient with accepting late work as well. Still, I truly believe my students have learned far more than test grades reflect.
Keep an eye out for Quia Activities to review the material on these tests (something I am working on for the next grading period).
Trivia
January 17th was the 300th Anniversary of the birth of what famous statesman and scientist? (Answer below)

Exam Test Help!

Students have received a number of study guides in class. We have spent every possible moment preparing for the exam and have been fortunate to have presentations from teachers from the Math and Science Center as well as former Brookland teacher Mrs. Joynt assist in preparing for exams.

Students should be sure to review vocabulary and I do recommend note card flash cards.

MID-JANUARY NOTE

I exported grades to K12 Planet on Friday. I still have many quiz and test grades from this week to enter and a few makeups to complete. I will again accept work next week, particularly from my students who may have been out when homework was checked. I apologize for a lapse in exporting due to a system "burp" in which I didn't know my export path was erased. I will export frequently next week and hope to be at a relaxed catch-up grade entry pace for next week in case your child has failed to share back work with me.

These Word formatted files contain notes from class on Chapters 10 and 12 and may be downloaded:
The Atom
The Periodic Table
Elements and Properties

I am offering Science tutoring after school from 3:20 to 4:30 on Monday and/or Thursday afternoons. If you would like your child to participate and have not received a permission slip, please contact me (email works). The class size for tutoring each week will be limited. I request that students let me know when they will attend so I may plan accordingly. Students are welcome to come on an as-needed basis. I also make myself available to students during lunch and most afternoons should your child need to see me.

NINE WEEK EXAM SCHEDULE
Monday, January 23: Period 2
Tuesday, January 24: Periods 1&5
Wednesday, January 25: Period 4
Thursday, January 26: Period 3
Friday, January 27: Exam Makeups; End of 2nd 9 Weeks

We have pushed to get through as much chemistry as possible during January. We have finished covering the Atomic Models and the Periodic Table, and are now working on Compounds and Chemical Bonds. The test in this will be early next quarter as willa study of Acids and Bases before we move on to Physics! Most of the students have figured out that I count all work we do - classwork, homework, quizzes, test, and labs.

We will finish the two projects (the Atomic models booklet and the Element Poster) that were started before the holidays. These are not difficult, but may turn into homework for some students.

Please check my calendar.

This is the season for absences. Please check K-12 Planet and discuss any missing assignments, quizzes, and tests with your child. Be sure they have turned in what they have done. Please encourage students to get these in to me if they have not yet done so and to make up missing quizzes and tests during Academic Wheel while the material is still fresh in their minds. The Science Notebook Table of Contents for the 2nd quarter is below.

In 6th period Academic Wheel, time is devoted to reading, reviewing topics from Life Science, and study hall.

Again, thank you for the delightful students you send me each day. They are a great group and I know they can all do well in science for the year. And thank you for helping them study, organize, and stay on task.
