103.01 Identify terms, definitions, rules personal protective equipment, OSHA expectations, classes of fires, MSDS, and types of fire extinguishers related to shop safety. Combustible - Materials or liquids that catch fire easily, Flash Point - the lowest temperature at which a substance gives off enough vapors to initiate combustion, Material Safety Data Sheets, (MSDS) - Written or printed material concerning a hazardous chemical. A MSDS for each chemical must be on file in the shop. Occupational safety and Health Administration, (OSHA) - Federal agency established to ensure safe and sanitary working conditions for employees. Personal Protective Equipment, (PPE) - Clothing or equipment worn for protection from potential bodily injury, associated with chemical use or machine operation. Examples - safety glasses, aprons, gloves, hearing protection, safety shoes. Hazard - A potential source of danger. Volatile Organic Compounds, (VOC) - Toxic substances that evaporate into the atmosphere, contributing to the development of smog and other health concerns. They can be found in blanket cleaner, ink cleaner, and other petrochemicals. Shop Safety Rules. Do not use any equipment until you understand how to use it, and then only after receiving permission. Never walk away from equipment that is in operation. Be sure that all safety guards are in place and keep hands away from moving parts. Only one operator per machine. Remove loose clothing and jewelry and tie back long hair before operating a machine. Wear all required personal protective equipment. Wash hands after they have come in contact with chemicals. Do not engage in horseplay or practical joking in the shop. Work only in well ventilated areas to prevent the build up of toxic fumes in the shop. Smoking is prohibited in the shop at all times. Dispose of all chemical wet rags in a fire proof container, (a metal container with a self-closing lid). Clean up your work area. Classes of fires. Type, A - combustible materials, (paper, wood, etc). Type: B - Chemicals and flammable liquids. Type: C - Electrical. We need an ABC extinguisher in graphics class. (a multi purpose dry chemical extinguisher). When using a fire extinguisher aim at the base of the fire. Material Safety Data Sheets. There must be a MSDS on file for every chemical in the shop, and it must be readily accessible to everyone. Purpose of the MSDS. - To inform the user of the material s physical properties and the dangers associated with using the chemical. - To tell the user the level of personal protective equipment needed. - To warn the user of the hazards of the chemical and to tell them the first aid treatment necessary if exposed to the chemical. - To tell how to handle the chemical in the event of a spill or fire. OSHA. Occupational Safety and Health Act. Things OSHA expects of an employer. - Provide a hazard-free workplace and comply with OSHA standards. - Maintain a MSDS file for every chemical in the shop. - Train employees how to work safely in the shop and around the chemicals. - Keep a record of all injuries and report all major injuries to OSHA. Things OSHA expects of an employee. - Follow safety rules. - Wear PPE's, (Personal Protective Equipment), as required. - Report any hazardous conditions to supervisor. - Report all job-related injuries to a supervisor and seek prompt treatment if required.
