Finally, the first of what will be many update you’ll receive between now and the end of October.
Finding Information I will be sending these updates whenever I create them. You can always find them by going to the October Exchange Main Page and clicking “All the updates you’ve received” link. There is also a Facebook page (it’s called Fairview-Cholet Exchange 2015 and can be found here ). I have also created a Schoology page, just to experiment with the new program. It won’t replace the Facebook page since the capability of posting and seeing pictures is more limited (and the Choletais can’t see it). But if it turns out to be a useful option to get the word out, I’ll continue.
Hosting Situation Unfortunately, since my August 6 FB post, we have not gained any new hosts. I was really hoping for a surge once the school year began. I have only had four people come to me for information. No definite “yes” replies yet, but I am optimistic. A few of you have offered to host a second student. When you did, I said that I’d prefer to save that option as a last resort. I may need to resort to that! I’ll wait for one more week for some replies. If nothing comes up by midnight this Friday, I’ll be taking you up on that offer. So if you haven’t done so already, think of whom you would like to host. (See the List of Cholet guests and Fairview hosts on the main page. I’ll update you next weekend.
Gift packages Many times, when the students arrive, we have had the hosts present gift packs. (I have a feeling we didn’t do this in 2013 – I can’t remember.) We give them bags with various “local realia”. This could include magnets, pens, pencils, baseball caps, brochures, etc. Be on the lookout for anything that would make a nice addition to this. Please don’t spend lots of money on this. What’s nice are things that are donated or relatively inexpensive. If possible, what’s inside each gift bag will be identical.
Excursions Don’t forget that you are eligible to sign up for the excursions (see the Excursions link on the main page. As hosts you have first dibs. If on September 12 there are still openings on any trips, I will make announcements inviting all FHS students to sign up. As of today, Pittsburgh and Niagara Falls are all set. Feel free to sign up. Cleveland will be ready soon.
Contact numbers I am compiling a list of phone numbers. It will be used on October 9 to keep you updated on the arrival of the Choletais (especially in the case of flight delays). It will also be used as we return from the excursions, just so you won’t end up waiting in the parking lot longer than necessary. I will need the numbers for all host students and at least one parent per family (but I can take more than one if you prefer). Please send me your numbers at your earliest convenience. If I already have your number since you were part of the June exchange, you have no need to re-send it. I will assume texting is fine for everyone. If you prefer phone calls, please let me know.
