Speaking Skills for Effective Communication and Oral Presentation

SYLLABUS

 

Course Description :  This course is especially designed to provide the students key competencies in the field of oral communication, relevant to the 21st century employment. It covers the general aspects of speech communication which includes a thorough grasp of the process of communication. It includes voice development anchored on diaphragmatic breathing, correct pronunciation and diction as well as enunciation and articulation of critical English sounds. Lastly, this course is intended to empower and boost the confidence of the students in various situations made possible by the inclusion of practical exposures in various human communication scenarios in and out of the classroom.

 

Pre-Requisite          :  None

General Objectives :   At the end of the semester, students should be able to:

 

  1. demonstrate a thorough grasp of the varied components of the communication process and how they apply to different communications situations particularly in the workplace;
  2. construct meaning from oral communication or spoken text;
  3. communicate clearly, fluently, effectively, and confidently with their fellowmen from their own country and other parts of the world;
  4. compose and deliver a speech based on a literary text, on course related topics and other themes that convey ideas or insights about Science, God, man and society, and values such as nationalism, loyalty, honesty, justice, courtesy, and concern for the environment;
  5. participate in the construction or formulation of rubrics to assess an individual or group performances;
  6. manifest an improved self-confidence, enhanced values of diligence, cooperation, honesty, patriotism, discipline, respect for the environment, moral and social responsibility perfectly aligned with the CEU’s twin philosophy of “ciencia y virtud”;
  7. illustrate and explain different communication situations based on internal and external environments;
  8. identify causes and effects of communication breakdowns and enumerate ways of preventing and addressing them;
  9. show confidence in public speaking using personally written speeches;
  10. perform oral interpretations of literary pieces applying proper use of the elements of voice; and
  11. organize a short program applying all learned speaking skills for effective communication
