Study Guide for Matter Test The nucleus of an atom is made up of Protons and Neutrons. Protons and Neutrons make up the atomic mass. The atomic number, number of protons and electrons are the same number. Protons have a positive charge. Neutrons are neutral. Electrons are negative. The Electron cloud is made up of electrons. The current model of an atom is called the Electron Cloud Model. The shell closest to the nucleus is the first shell, the shell number increases as you go outward from the center. The smallest part of matter is an atom. The following parts of matter from smallest to the largest are protons, nucleus and atom. The first letter of a chemical symbol is written as a capital letter. The second and third letters are lower case. The periodic table was arranged by atomic number by Mendeleyev. Metals on the Periodic Table are located at the left of the stair step. The periodic table is not yet complete.
