Summary of the Book of Jeremiah Jeremiah came from a family of priest in the small town of Anathoth in Judah. In fact, Jeremiah himself was a priest before God called him to be a prophet at the age of 17. Jeremiah used his youth to resist God's calling, but the calling was so strong, Jeremiah became one of the major prophets. God knew Jeremiah would be a prophet before he was born according to Jeremiah 1:5, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." Jeremiah dictated prophecies from the Lord to his secretary, Baruch. God chose Jeremiah to speak to the people of Judah on the Lord’s behalf, but the people did not listen. Even his own family considered him a laughingstock and attempted to kill him. Jeremiah continued to prophesy to people who wouldn't listen to him. This caused Jeremiah much sadness as he fulfilled his calling for the rest of his life. Jeremiah's prophecies did come true. Because the people did not listen to him, God sent His own people into exile. The people of Judah disobeyed the Lord’s commandments time and time again. Therefore, they were finally punished. We get to know Jeremiah through his compassion for the people who would not listen to him and who would not obey God.
