Psalm 114 READ PSALM 114. This psalm is anonymous like all the other psalms in this lesson. The psalmist wrote it to show that God is doing wondrous deeds for Israel. He also uses two specific times in Israel's history when God led the people through the Red Sea and the Jordan River. In other words, God led the people out of the land of bondage into the land of blessings. Psalm 115 READ PSALM 115. The psalmist speaks out against idolatry by comparing the one true living God with idols. First the psalmist gives description about God. Then he describes false gods. Psalm 116 READ PSALM 116. The anonymous psalmist describes his attitudes toward the Lord, the deliverances he experienced, and his determination to praise God. First, he tells what God does for the psalmist, then he tells what the psalmist does for God. Psalm 117 READ PSALM 117. This is the shortest of the psalms with only two verses and 17 words. It is the shortest chapter in the entire Bible. It is also middle chapter of the King James Version of the Bible. The psalmist issues an invitation for justice. He expresses universal praise to the Lord. He answers the questions: what, why, and who. 1 Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples. 2 For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord. Psalm 118 READ PSALM 118. The psalmist invites praise to the Lord for his goodness, demonstrates his worthiness, testifies of his deliverance, and offers prayers of praise. The psalmist first urges the people to praise God. Then he urges the priests to praise God. Read through the entire psalm to find out about the psalmist's pain and why he invited people to praise God. This psalm is centered on God, in a movement that expresses gratitude, admiration, joy and praise. In the King James Version, the Lord is mentioned in almost every verse. Psalm 119 READ PSALM 119. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible with 176 verses divided into 22 stanzas of 8 verses. The entire psalm has references to God's word. Every verse except Verses 84, 90, 91, 121, 122, and 149 has "word" or a synonym for "word." Synonyms: --- commands --- decrees --- statutes --- law --- precept --- promise Each of the 22 sections of 8 verses is subheaded with the name of a letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Even though most readers don't know Hebrew, they ignore the word for the alphabet at the beginning of each section.
