BOOK OF ESTHER CHAPTER 10 The Greatness of Mordecai King Ahasuerus imposed tribute throughout the empire, to its distant shores. 2 And all his acts of power and might, together with a full account of the greatness of Mordecai, whom the king had promoted, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Media and Persia? 3 Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Ahasuerus, preeminent among the Jews, and held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews. COMMENTARY This short chapter is about Mordecai being honored for his good deed. King Ahasuerus promoted him to be second in rank to him. Mordecai was held in high esteem by many fellow Jews. Things to Remember from the Book of Esther 1. Esther and Ruth are the only two Bible books named after a woman. 2. God is not mentioned at all in the Book of Esther. 3. Out of the ten chapters in the Book of Esther, her name is not mentioned in Chapter 1 and Chapter 10. 4. Esther's name is mentioned 46 times. 5. The main messages in the Book of Esther are God's providence for the Jews and God's judgment on the enemies of the Jews. 6. Most of the action in the Book of Esther takes place in the citadel of Susa. 7. King Ahasuerus is the same as King Xerxes. 8. Esther became queen after Queen Vashti. 9. Haman was Mordecai's enemy. 10. Esther's famous words were: "If I perish, I perish." 11. Esther said those words because she took a chance going to see the king without him stretching out his gold scepter. That could have been deadly for her. 12. Haman was impaled on the pole he had constructed for Mordecai. 13. King Ahasuerus promised Esther half of his kingdom if she wanted it. Esther said she wanted the king to give the Jews in Susa permission to carry out the edict for the Jews not to be annihilated but let Haman's ten sons be impaled on poles. 14. Purim was the two days observed to commemorate the defeat of the plot to kill all Jews. 15. The Jews continue to celebrate Purim every year.
