Hello 10th graders and welcome back!!! This website will contain all the homework assignments for this class. I will label each assignment with a number. (Some assignments are used with the permission of Michael Degan) #1 9/13/04 I hope you have a good day back to school. For tonight, you need to complete the writing sample that was begun in class. In addition, you must get your contract signed and purchase all the necessary materials for this course. #2 9/14/04 Read the "Jackie" essay. In your notebook with a minimum of four sentences per question answer the following questions: 1.What do you think is the author's intention in writing this essay? 2. To what extent is this essay effective in its use of description? 3. Circle all the verbs in the essay. Describe how the verbs in the essay make it more vivid. #3 9/15/04 Sophomores for the weekend-- consider the telling sentence: My parents seem angry. In 10-12 sentences, typed, double spaced, proper heading, and title: write a composition that SHOWS us your parents are angry. * Do not use the telling sentence in the composition. *You may want to begin in the middle of the action (but you do not have to). *Show some of the senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, taste. *Be as creative as possible! *Use specific, concrete details Ultimately, remember SHOW DON'T TELL!!!! #4 9/20/04 *****Vocabulary quiz on Friday, October 1, 2004! For Wednesday: In 10-12 sentences, describe/show a person performing an action or job. Remember your work must be typed, include proper heading, creative title, double spaced lines. 9/21/04 Same as above--however underline all active verbs!!!! Grammar Quiz on Friday (9/24/04) #5 9/22/04 Read John Updike's A&P. Prepare for grammar quiz for Friday. 9/24/04 Reread Ernest Hemingway's short story "Ten Indians" In 10-12 sentences, typed, double spaced, proper heading, title respond to the following question: To what extent is Nick's father abusive towards Nick? (Suggestion: you will need to qualify the term "abuse" in order to create a coherent/understandable argument either way). Prepare for the vocabulary quiz for next Friday (Oct. 1st) 9/27/04 Read Alan Sillitoe's "The Bike." Respond to the following question: In this short story, how does use of language identify to the reader the different social class? 10/4/04 You should have read "Prelude" for Tuesday. In your notebook-- in 8-10 sentences choose either the narrator or Sucker. Write an inner monologue on how they are feeling after the climax of the story when the narrator explodes at Sucker. 10/12/04 For Thursday--read pages 1-32 of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. Respond to the following questions in your notebook: 1.)Where is the introduction taken from? 2.)Why does Morrison begin her book with this introduction? 3.)Compare the intro on pages 1-2 to the intro on pages 3-4.
