In Third Grade Art at HPES our students study: the artistic process in detail, architecture in ancient Greece and Rome, and be introduced to many different art processes. The following concepts are some of the things we learn about in third grade art.
Colors
-Intermediate Colors: red-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green, yellow-green, and yellow-orange
-Warm and Cool Colors: warm colors associate with fire (red) and cool with ice (blue).
Depth
-Overlapping: to show an object behind another.
-Placement in the picture: objects that are closer to you are closer to the bottom of the page.
-Size: Objects that are closer to you are bigger; as objects get further away they get smaller.
Basic Architectural Forms
-Sphere, prisms, cone, pyramids (3-sided and 4-sided), and cylinders (columns).
Patterns
-Motifs: associated with the art of ancient Greece

-Craftsmanship
-Balance: Symmetrical and Asymmetrical
-Positive and negative space
-Spatial relationships
Categorizing Art
-Landscape, cityscape, or seascape.
-Portrait or self-portrait.
-Still life.
