Tips for a Study Schedule That Works

1. Study during daylight hours if at all possible.  Experts have found that one hour of day time study is equal to one and a half hours of night study.  If you get your work done as soon after school as possible, you will have more time for relaxing in the evening.  Watch TV, talk on the phone, get on the computer AFTER homework.

2. Review every subject as soon as possible, but definitely within 24 hours.  Forgetting takes its greatest toll in 24 hours.  By reviewing a little every day, you eliminate the need to cram.  Spreading it out is more effective than massed learning.

3. Study in a quiet place with the TV, stereo, radio (includes your iPod) turned OFF!  If you do your work in a quiet place, you will spend less total time studying and get more learning for the time you spend.

4. Plan to use “Dead Time,” short periods of time at school which are normally wasted.  Use your Homeroom time, the few minutes at the beginning or end of your classes, or 8th period.

5. Build short breaks into your study schedule.  You should schedule a ten minute break after fifty minutes of study.  Breaks will help you concentrate better and finish faster.  Be sure your breaks are not longer than your study session and be sure to schedule them.

6. Prioritize assignments.  If you have a paper due the next day, a reading assignment for science, a test in German, and a project due in two weeks, you obviously need to prioritize and do “First things first.”  Complete the assignments that must be done by the next day in order of importance.  Study German, complete the paper, read the science, work on the project.  If you have no time to work on the project, at least meet the two most important deadlines.  Learn to prioritize.

7. Estimate the amount of time each assignment will take, plan when you are going to work on each subject, and set a stopping time for your study session.  This will force you to work toward a specific goal and help you to concentrate.  Planning ahead will also ensure that your break is not longer than your study session.

8. Allow enough time for sleep, a well-balanced diet, and leisure activities.  If you keep up with your school work on a daily basis, there should be no need to cram and you should have plenty of time for play.
