*The RATIO of two numbers (a and b) may be written in a variety of ways. In writing the ratio of two numbers, it is usually helpful to express the ratio (fraction) in simplest form. **A ratio is comparing two similar quantities. (basketball shots; students per teacher  . . ).

*A RATE is a quotient, that compares two quantities that cannot be converted to the same unit of measure (driving 200 miles in 4 hours; what is your average speed; 200 miles divided by 4 hours, equals 50 miles per hour).

**The quantities being compared are different (miles per hour; cost per item).  If a fraction, the denominator is always 1.
