techbudget Tech Budget Committee

*Note: We may end up using lots of the money on things we must order for the new network and on rewiring the labs so take that into consideration.
  Cost Benefits Cons Comments
Upgrade Computer Labs (Software, Hardware or both)   Labs are 5 years old and quite outdated.  Software is 3 versions behind the high school and the new Dells.  If we don't put aside money to upgrade, they will not be upgraded.  Maintenance will start to cost more and more as labs age.  If replaced, computers would still provide possibility of an extra lab or 2 at Pizitz since they are WIn 98 computers and could be used for a research lab or student computers anywhere in the building.
Wireless Lab $60,000 Any classroom turns into a lab.  Teachers already familiar with technology.  Endless possibilities Cost Could get one cart now or put this in tech plan and then Angie and PTA will help.
Pin drives $200-$300 each for large ones with lots of storage. Teacher could back up whole class of data and take anywhere to present and then delete when not needed.
Palm lab   Less expensive than full lab.  Not familiar with applications yet.  Not as many as for full computer lab.
Web cams   Allow video conferencing, multimedia presentations, etc.
Quia subscriptions for entire school $950 Extremely easy to use.  Teachers already trained.  Update from anywhere.  Useful for class pages, parent surveys, test review games, online tests.  Works well with Wireless lab checkouts.  Best product for our school environement.
Upgrading computer software     Will not have enough money to upgrade everyone so will still have multiple versions of software. Sotware upgrades require memory and disk upgrades -lots of money and time spent on old computer technology
Smart Boards $4000 for complete package including data video projector/ cables/cart Students like them. Large to maneuver around.  Need training on.  Can break? Do they add enough value versus cost?
Flash licenses Probably $60/each if we buy at least 10.  Would like a full lab of 30 licenses. So total about $1800 97% of online users have the flash player download so anything created in Flash viewable by a large audience.  Students could create animations teaching various concepts for teachers to use on web pages, in class or as reviews. Only used in labs or where loaded.
Data video projectors $2000-$3000 Helps in one computer classroom.  Used with CPS, wireless lab, anywhere. Expensive both for purchase and maintenance.  Hopefully something better will come along soon.
Laptops for Checkout   Ann says they are used frequently.   Need to get specs on how they are being used.
CD burners $200/each approx. Save data to send home.  Easy/cheap way to take data around.   Must decide on why we need them.  Now that we have a shared network drive, may not need these anymore.  Also, an keydrive might replace this for transfer of data but if want to send e-portfolios home, the burners would still be needed.
GIS Free?     Already purchased?
Digital Cameras $800/each?  $1200 for cd cameras? Lots of use here.  Lots of projects. Need to standardize what we buy.
Digital Video Camera $1000-$1500 Useful/Can do editing, etc.
