Welcome to the 2011-2012 Abingdon High School 10th grade Physical Education/Driver Education program. I look forward to having your son or daughter in my class. This is an exciting year for the students and somewhat fearful for a lot of parents and guardians. It's driver's license time, and I am committed to teaching the students the good, the bad and the ugly about driving. I am passionate about your child's safety on the highways and trust you as parents and guardians will work with me in teaching our new drivers how to be safe and responsible whenever they are behind the steering wheel of an automobile. Message Classroom requirements: 1) Absolutely no cell phones or electronics unless provided by the teacher. 2) Students must be in THEIR assigned seats when the late bell rings. 3) Students who need to use the restroom or get water need to do so before class. You must still be on time for class. 4) Students must turn in assignments on time. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get missed assignments. School board policy will be followed on make-up work. 5) All assignments must be neat and ledgeable and include student's name, date, class period and name of assignment. 6) Respect your peers, teacher, and all visitors in the classroom. Physical Education Requirements 1) All students must dress out daily in appropriate gym clothes (shorts, socks, t-shirt, sweat pants, sweat shirt, tennis shoes etc.) 2) Students must follow AHS dress code when dressing out. 3) Students may only be excused from participating/dressing out with a doctor's excuse. A written assignment will be required for those not dressing out and/or participating. 4) No horseplay will be tolerated. 5) No cell phones or electronics will be allowed in gym class. 6) Personal hygiene is extemely important. Showers are available for use after class. 7) LEAVE ALL VALUABLES AT HOME! The following is the Physical Education/Driver Education grading scale A = 100-93 B = 92-85 C = 84-77 D = 76-70 F = 69 and below Materials list needed for class Pens Pencils Notebook Driver Education Manual (provided by the school) Tennis shoes, gym clothing and personal hygiene items Dress-out Policy Failure to comply with AHS dress-out policy will result in the following: 1st time - warning 2nd time - one day of afternoon detention 3rd time - two hour afternoon detention 4th time - Saturday school (assigned by office) 5th time - Meeting with administrator Advanced Physical Education All rules and guidelines apply to the Advanced Physical Education as it does to regular physical education classes. Advanced Physical Education class is an upper level class designed to teach a variety of lifelong activities. This class in not required for graduation but students do earn 1 credit hour for sucessful completion of this elective. The class is offered to seniors only who have a GPA of 3.0 (GPA will be determined according to the number of applicants) and no disciplinary actions against them. Activities such as golf, tennis, orienteering, bowling, camping, fishing, archery and special classes such as CPR, are a few of the activities students will be parcipating in. These classes are part of helping to make lifelong activities enjoyable and safe for health and wellness in the future. Therefore, students will be required to assist in planning, developing, providing, and teaching these activities. Assessments will be based on attitude, participation, class projects, individual work and a written comprehensive exam.
