tokens Ms. Becker

A token economy system is defined as a program in which students earn points or tokens for appropriate behavior. These tokens are then traded in at a later date for preferred activities, objects, or privileges.

Research has shown that token economies can work in the classroom to reduce undesired behavior. However, it is best if the teacher doesn't rely on tokens forever, but at some point is able to remove the token and the student continues the desired behavior.

This is a valuable page for teachers, parents, and any others who must deal with managing behaviors in various settings. It offers links to a variety of sites that offer explanations as well as step by step instructions on how to implement a token economy system to reinforce appropriate behaviors and decrease inappropriate behaviors. There are also sites that address the question of the effectiveness of using a token economy system. I believe token economies are worth looking into and then decide for yourself if you think it would be beneficial to you and the students/children you are working with.
