COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will learn the basic forms of journalistic writing, design and layout. Students should be able to work independently, write with few grammatical errors, take responsibility for their work, and meet deadlines. Publication students will produce a school newspaper and may produce a magazine of student works. Students who successfully complete this course do not need to take Introduction to Newspaper in high school.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to show PRIDE in their attitudes and work. They must take care of the computer equipment and act in a safe manner in the lab. They must follow the Network Etiquette rules that are listed in the Student Handbook. GRADING POLICY
Student progress is continually monitored. The following assessments are conducted regularly:
- Assignments relating to journalism
-Ability to work independently
-Self and peer editing in written work
-Completion of articles and other assignments on time.
Grades will be determined as follows:
- Daily work/participation: 70%
- Projects, tests: 30%
WEEKLY OBJECTIVES
Students will begin each day with a Free Write question which will get their creative writing juices flowing. They need to remember to watch the news so they can complete three current events summaries that are due every Friday.
MONDAY
Students will be writing their articles for the 1st issue of the Phoenix. They must write 3 articles for their section. They must be edited to work toward perfection. They must be done with the final draft by the due date set by their editor.
TUESDAY
Students will work on articles. Each student by the end of the semester must have completed an interview of an adult and a student.
WEDNESDAY
Students will work on articles. Each student by the end of the semester must have completed an interview of an adult and a student.
THURSDAY
Students will work on articles. Each student by the end of the semester must have completed an interview of an adult and a student.
FRIDAY
Students will turn in their Current Events assignment and their Free Write. They will then work on their articles for the Phoenix.
