Week of March 16 and March 23 NOTE: The Week of March 16 is now a vacation week. It is Spring Break. The Grade 5 State ELA Testing Dates have been moved to March 31 and April 1. As I am sure you are aware, our school will be closed for the next two weeks. Below is the letter that I sent home regarding work to do during the school closure. However, I did not realize that next week would be a vacation week. The district has decided to convert next week to our Spring Break (instead of the week of April 6). Therefore, at the directive of Dr. Freeston, your child does not need to complete any work next week. They can begin to work on the assignments during the week of March 23. Also, the district will be sharing a distance learning website for you to access during the week of March 23. I did show the students how to navigate this site today, but it is my understanding that the site will not be available to you until sometime next week. Therefore, if we are back in school on March 30, as I hope we will be, I do not expect that students will have completed all of the work I have sent home. They only need to complete five days work of work in reading and math and one DCCR. Sorry for any confusion in this regard. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me. I will check my school e-mail regularly. I look forward to seeing the students back at school on March 30, and wish you good health in the meantime. LETTER THAT WAS SENT HOME IN BACKPACKS TODAY: 3/13/20 Dear Parents, In math, our class is a little ahead of the other three fifth grade classes. Therefore, I am sending home two DCCR sheets (attached). The first is for the week of 3/16 and the second is for the week of 3/20. Whether we have school or not, this is the assigned math work for the next two weeks. This work will be graded, as the DCCR always is. The DCCR is meant to help students review and remember concepts that they have already learned in math. Therefore, students should not do both DCCR’s at the same time. It is good to spread the work out over time so that students are reviewing a little bit every day, rather than all at once. If school is cancelled for an extended period of time, you will be provided with a link to access additional DCCR’s. These are from Unit 9. (We are now on Unit 10.) Some of the ones that are posted on the website may be ones that your child has already done, but extra practice is always good, so students can work through the Unit 9 DCCR’s as well. This work is not mandatory. Besides the reading and math material available on the distance learning website, I have given each student a copy of the review materials for the NYS ELA Test (currently scheduled for Wednesday March 25 and Thursday March 26), and the NYS Math Test (currently scheduled for April 22 and 23). Students will use these booklets only if we are not in school for an extended period of time. I have included a schedule for completing these booklets. See below. Please contact me if you or your child has any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Virginia Tait Ready New York CCLS for Math – Work through 5 pages a day.
