One summer, Ruth, with her father and mother, visited her aunt in Venice, Italy. They stayed in her aunt's house near the sea. One day Ruth's aunt took her guests sight-seeing. Ruth was surprised to find that canals were used instead of streets. The water in the canals flowed in from the sea. That day she saw no horses, carriages, or carts. People went about in boats just as we ride in cars. The children of Venice would be surprised to ride in our automobiles and buses, just as Ruth was surprised at having a boat ride.
