One day last spring Mary and Ethel went to pick flowers. They walked along until they came to a pasture at the edge of the woods. Here they found some Mayflowers. The children liked the sweet-smelling pink and white blossoms.

Mayflowers sometimes hide under leaves and grass. They have very strong stems and roots, and hold on tightly to the earth. It is difficult to make them let go. Mary and Ethel were careful not to pull the flowers up by the roots, because they wanted to find more blossoms next spring.
