Examples: brunch (breakfast + lunch); smog (smoke + fog); Texarkana (Texas - Arkansas); blog (web + log); Brangelina (Brad + Angelina); Spanglish (Spanish + English)
Root Word: the form of a word after all affixes are removed.
For example,
the root word of "photograph" is "-graph-" after removing the prefix "photo-".
the root word of "agreeable" is "-agree-" after removing the suffix "-able".
Root words have a line in front and back, like this -graph-.
Affixes: A word element, such as a prefix or suffix, that can only occur attached to a base, stem, or root.
Prefix: An affix attached to the front of word
Examples: pretest (pre+test); unhappy (un+happy); photography (photo+graph)
Prefixes have a line after them, like this un-
Suffix: An affix attached to the end of word.
Examples: American (America+an); physician (physics+cian), wooden (wood+en)
Suffixes have a line in front of them, like this -ly, -able.
