COMMA USAGE - Essential vs. Nonessential 1

Read the following sentences carefully. Decide whether the phrase in the sentence is essential or nonessential to the GRAMMATICAL meaning of the sentence, and mark your answer. Then in the space provided, correct the sentence by adding any commas necessary. Remember, commas are only needed to separate nonessential phrases.

(a parenthetical phrase is one that is not GRAMMATICALLY essential to the sentence structure--i.e., when you take the phrase away, the sentence still makes the same basic sense; when you remove an essential phrase, the sentence either is no longer a complete sentence at all, or the basic meaning of the sentence shifts to something that is not what the writer originally intended.
