2. An apostrophe is used to show the omission of letters or figures: summer of '99, we're (we are)
3. An apostrophe is used to show the plurals of letters, words, numbers and signs. In print, such words are italicized. In manuscript, they may be underlined or placedin quotes: The uh's in his lecture made it less effective.
