The fundamental structure of the DNA double helix is based on a unit called a nucleotide. This unit, composed of sugar (deoxyribose), a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base is formed into an extremely long chain. In DNA, two such chains are bonded together and twisted, resulting in a double helix structure.
